StopForumSpam and Email Blacklist

Post by TheKawaiiPug on July 26th 2016, 10:27 am

The admin of another site I'm a user of (non-Forumotion) gave me a huge list of temporary/spam/etc email domains he's compiled on his forum: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/wagey/config-files/master/email_blocks.cfg

Could these all be added to a blacklist in order to prevent spam signups and such?
As well, why does Forumotion not yet have any way to enable StopForumSpam username, email and IP blocking? I'd like the feature implemented so Russian/Ukranian/etc pharmacy advertisers and all the other spammers of the world can't register and I don't need to block individual IP ranges and addresses of spammers.

Thanks Smile

@TheKawaiiPug this blacklist system already exists in Forumotion Wink

Of course it's imposible to have EVERY spammer nickname/email/IP tracked because everyday new ones appear, but the thing is that Forumotion system already got it, and it is updated regularly with new spammers information.

Ah, that's pretty cool then, no need to worry about spammers then.
Is it possible to block reverse proxies, Tor and VPN either by banning the IP ranges or specific addresses? I'm getting a lot of registrations from this one guy that keeps trying to attack the board with useless remarks/etc I think he's hiding behind reverse proxies and such.

Also why do IPs only log when someone posts? Not shown on the online user list or profile page/etc. :/

Hello,

The blocking of proxy servers is already a suggestion, so far though, it has been the opinion of most to not block it serverside because of the fact that for some people, proxy servers are the only way to access the web and if you block proxy servers, you could block off honest members of sites as well, which is something forumotion does not want to do.

As the ip thing, as already stated Forumotion does a black list, we do not know what is on it and what is not, but I can tell you it is updated fairly often.

In addition you can also ban ip addresses, email addresses, etc yourself for your indiviual forum using those ban features.

There are only two ways to see a member's IP address.

From a post by the member or be online at the same time and check the who's online section in the homepage of the administration panel.

Hello to block proxy servers would block about 10,000 members in the uk if not more as all BT hosted internet members have a proxy ip address "rolloing ip address" so not only them members but lots more all over the world would also have the same problem and then you not get any members.

So FM would not install this anytime soon.

SLGray and Ape are correct Smile

On my old Forumotion board that I closed off, I have over 30 pages of spam IPs these were obtained when in in the Admin panel. Checked the IPs on Google then ban, however in UK you have to be careful as there are IPs that were spam and now they are not classed as spam.
The only way you will know if an email address is spam is if you catch the new member on line and do the IP check in the Admin panel.

Finally a word of advice from my own experience, if you are advertising your site using the forum link on other sites in you signature, or using Twitter. This will attract spammers, this part of my reason why I closed the original board I had on forumotion.

Cassini Smile
