Email notification when 'new' topic is posted or started

Post by tdupriest on October 21st 2016, 8:57 pm

I am hoping you can help us by adding this option as it doesn't seem to be available. Every time a 'new' topic or post is made to our forum we need our members to get an email notification that there's a post made so other members can answer and help. They wouldn't know to look at forum unless they received an email that someone has posted a new topic. I see where we can get an email when someone posts a reply, however, we need one when the topic is first posted. We are trying to simplify our way of getting questions and answers amongst our County Tax Offices and we think a forum would be great but we unless they check it all day long, which most do not have time, Tax Commissioners wouldn't know there's a post/question to reply to. Can you please help us?

I'm a little confused. I see that option but that's only after a topic is posted correct? Members wouldn't know what to watch until something was posted or am I not understanding.

If we select start watching forum we would have to do that to each forum started, right? Also under each forum when someone posts a new topic, would that give email notification to all members being they selected to watch the main topic? Sorry for all the questions. We are just trying to find the best forum for our group.

Members will have to set the settings in their profiles (Preferences & Notifications).

As of right now, I set our forum up with only 2 of us so we can test it to make sure it does what we need it to. We selected yes to have notifications on all options under preferences and notifications, however, when I posted a new topic it didn't email anyone to let them know something was posted. Not sure if we are doing something wrong but everything you've stated we did.

Are you watching the sections where you started the topics?

@ChanelW

This only happens for TOPIC REPLIES. What the user wants is to be able to have notifications for NEW topics. Even though I personally dont use the notification system and have disabled all my email notifications on FM Forums (I am usually pretty good at checking topics I have replied to and such). I do, however, see how this could be very useful to some users who prefer to recieve email notifications rather then just check in often.

I vote YES!

Edit: Just to clarify this for everyone else (I dealt with this user's support topic on this so I think I may understand what he wants), I think what the user would like is for there to be an option in the profile notification options (built in by default) to be able to recieve notifications of new topics, regardless of the section, without having to manually watch every single forum or check in constant to watch every topic. Wink

Well when I tested this on my forum a while back for watch forums, I got an email for new topics.

Yes, we are needing an email notification letting us know that someone has posted a new issue or question so that other TC's can respond. Currently we use an email server list which fills up our email with constant replies. Then once resolved, most will delete those emails then several months later another TC will have the same issue. With a forum we can simply go back to that issue/topic and see all the replies.

Thank you and I am sorry. All this forum stuff is new to me. Our organization put me in charge of setting it all up and it has been a challenge. As we get other Tax Commissioners set up, I am telling them to go to each topic and select watch topic for now so that they will be notified but hoping to get an option added under notifications to select yes or no to receive email notification when a new topic/subject is posted so that all members will have the option to sign on and reply. Again, thank you for your help.

you can get an email notification for when NEW TOPICS are made = http://prntscr.com/cypyz1

all you need to do is:
1) click the forum/sub-forum you would like to use to get a new topic notification http://prntscr.com/cyq0un

2) scroll to the very bottom right where you can switch pages, and then click "start watching forum"
http://prntscr.com/cyq1op

3) once thats done = http://prntscr.com/cyq26e
