First Impressions

  • As soon as I enter the forum, I am greeted with a very welcoming pop-up message that indicates exactly what the forum is about. It will instantly alert a member to whether the forum will be for them or not, and it gives them the feeling that the forum is well set-up. This first impression alone will be very beneficial for gaining new members. When they start scrolling, they are exposed to the many sections of support the forum offers. This is very encouraging, as you will most likely be able to cover whatever problem they have come to the forum for. The only suggestion I have for this area is the heading for the forum. You have a forum icon in the top left corner that is very nice. However, its size is small, so there isn't much that really attracts the complete attention of a guest. If you had a title for the forum beside this icon, this would bring out the full potential of that empty space at the top. That being said, the pop-up message will initially gain attention, which aids this issue.

General Forum Appearance

  • Your forum appearance is quite the generic design, but given the forum's subject and objective, this isn't an issue. You utilise the use of multiple colours for the theme so all members can be happy with the colours. The text colours you have used are easy on the eyes, and the text is large enough to read clearly. There are no conflicts in design or colour. I personally have one suggestion for this area of the forum. The forums (or categories) may benefit from the inclusion of forum icons. These icons will provide a unique nature to the forum, and also give the appearance a little variety. This will help distinguish it from the generic forum appearance.

Forum Activity

  • Your forum activity is quite impressive. All of your forums have had posts in them from this month. For a forum with the objective of providing support such as yours, this is extremely encouraging. You are less than 5,000 members from getting to the 100,000 mark, which shows how many members you have helped over the course of your forum's existence. However, it is also evident that the forum's activity is not at its full potential. Activity is hard to maintain in a support-only forum, as once a member has received the help they need, they don't have an immediate need for the forum's services anymore. I'd suggest continuing to advertise your forum's services, and affiliating with other forums will really help expose your forum to a wider audience. The 'Entertainment Lounge' is beneficial to keep a member's interest. I'd like to see more discussion topics, as these are related to the forum's subject, and will give members a chance to contribute more. Otherwise, this is very impressive.

Staff & Usergroups

  • There is a vast amount of usergroups on your forum. The descriptions for these roles are highly detailed and descriptive, so a member knows exactly who to contact for support or advice. The Academy feature is very exciting, as it gives members a goal to work towards. It allows them to interact with the staff and gain benefits for the forum. The staff have remained active on the forum, and there's a good amount that they can be easily covered for if need be. They interact well in the community.

Forum Originality

  • There isn't much room for originality with a support forum, as they need to stick to a guide of topics and forums. I commend your idea with the Academy program. This is quite an original idea. However, like most forums that share a similar subject, there isn't much content that makes your forum stand out. It's very hard to achieve this, but I'd suggest creating the icons mentioned in the forum appearance section of the review to help. Other than this, think of more creative ideas and contests to make your community more different and original. You've done well with the room you have, but I personally think there's a little room for improve.

Forum Layout & Organization

  • The navigation around your forum is really easy. Every section is split appropriately, so members know exactly where to go for their section of support. The layout is quite easy to understand. There are no real negatives to this section. With your forum being focused on support, you may like to think about adding widgets containing staff members and/or some small pointers about what type of support is offered. Otherwise, I really commend this section.

Grammar & Spelling

  • I couldn't find any spelling or gramatical errors.

Geek Police

First Impressions

  • Upon first entering the site, I was immediatly drawn to the overall design of the forum and the unique looking banner. The colors and images really grabbed my attention and really made me thing, "WOW". The one thing that also grabbed my attention was the 2 navigation bars. That is one thing I wanted to question about because I don't see the need for a navigation bar underneath the header of your forum as well as having one at the top of your forum in the bar. that follows you when you scroll. Also, when scrolling, the 3 bar menu that comes out also has another navigation section in there. Effectively showing 2 navigation menus no matter where you look. That is the one thing that stood out to me that I don't think is 100% needed. 1 Navigation in the header that then follows if you scroll would be fine but not 2 consistently. Otherwise, I do like the feel and environment of your forum and I think you have done a pretty good job with my first impressions.

General Forum Appearance

  • Your forum design and color scheme really stands out to me. The creative colors of a dark blue and purple type look to it really stands out for most forums on light themes seem to be more light blue based but yours really stands out and sticks to me. The banner does seem a bit small and leaves a lot of the header space unused and just "wasted" but that is all based upon personal preference. I like the shield idea and it is very unique to your type of forum. Might want to see if there is anything you can do about the header space that is unused. I also like use of the avatars circle design and the unique ranks that you have for your forum. Overall I think you have done a wonderful job with your overall design of your forum and I can't wait to see how you continue to grow this forum!

Forum Activity

  • Your forum activity does seem to be doing well as your stats do show the past 48 hours which is a nice way to look at it rather then limiting it to 24 hours and it doesn't overextend it to like a week. It is also nice to see more then just staff showing up online within a 48 hour period. This helps show that your forum is truly growing and it is definitely gaining the popularity it deserves. I do also see you have just barely over 4,000 members until you hit 100,000 members which is a huge achievements on many forums so congrats and keep it up! I do also see you have over 200,000 posts made on your forum which would average out to almost 2,000 posts per user which is a huge number so keep up the great work in keeping your community growing. You have done an amazing job for your forum being just over 9 years old so keep up whatever you are doing to make your forum so successful!

Staff & Usergroups

  • You have a good selection of usergroups for your forum and the descriptions make it very easy to know which groups are classified as staff vs those who are helpful members but not quite staff members. I like the idea of several Academy group ideas such as the levels you would have for schools which matches the "Academy" idea. So definitely keep that up! I think you have a great amount of usergroups and don't think you need anything to change on that aspect of your forum! Just keep up the great work and make sure those groups stay both active and keep them unique.

Forum Originality

  • Looking at the originality of your forum, I haven't encountered a forum based around "Geek" type stuff. I usually see stuff more based around a specific type of technology or software like Android, Apple, Adobe, ect. So your type of forum really stands out to me where it gives people with those similar interests to meet and have thoughtful discussions to help benefit not only their own knowledge but the forum itself. I also love the color changer for the overall theme that you have impletemented, I really should have put that in the forum design section but I think it is also very original since this was the first time I have seen this on any forum so it really grabbed my attention and really makes your forum stand out since members and even guests can just change the color to something that fits them better. Overall your forum has a very unique and original feel and look to it so great job there.

Forum Layout & Organization

  • One thing about the layout of your forum I will nitpick on this is the navigation. It is easy to navigate but the navigation bar itself will always stand out to me since I was able to find 3 navigation bars, 2 of which are always there whether you are at the top of the forum or scrolling through. Personally I think only 1 will be needed but that is just my personal opinion. You have a good overall layout of your categories and forums all throughout your forum and each of those nicely organized. It really makes it easy to look through myself and be able to find threads based around my specific need due to the great organization you have currently. One other thing I would recommend+* would be to move the "General Forums" stuff up to the top since that is where new members will be able to introduce themselves, ask questions, and find the forum rules and you may not want to have all that stuff at the bottom of your forum. Putting it at the top makes it easier for new members to see that when they first enter the site and know where to go first.

Grammar & Spelling

  • Just looking through your forum, threads, and some other posts I wasn't able to find any spelling or grammar errors that stood out to me so great job to both you and your members for keeping things looking professional with proper spelling and grammar!
