Ability to create 'Link' topics

Post by dremits on April 2nd 2008, 10:40 pm

Hi. I thought of this and i don't think it's been suggested.

I am suggesting there should be a forum feature to create a 'Link' topic. This basically means you can create a topic in one forum that actually links to another topic. Either this or a 'Copy' topic which means that there may be multiple topics, but all update to the original topic. These topics may be identified with the phrase [LINK] preceeding the title of the post (or something like that) in much the same way that shadows of topics that have been moved can be identified.

I don't understand. What is the purpose of having multiple topics that are for the same thing? Also, how exactly would you link to the other topic? Where would this link happen?

Hi,

Ignore my example of copies and focus on linking. I'll give you this example:

Say if I have a forum that is called "Dates and Announcments" and I post something about a particular event (called for example "New race coming up!"). I may also have a forum called "Car Racing" and I think the thread I created in "Dates and Announcments" would interest readers of "Car Racing". Instead of just copying the post I created, I create a 'Link' topic (as suggested in my previous post). The topic entitled "New race coming up!" is selected in some kind of interface in the 'New Topic' screen and I have created a 'Link' topic. The topic isn't the same topic as my "Dates and Announcments" topic but in fact links to it. So in the "Car Racing" forum you now see a 'topic' that reads: "[LINK] New race coming up!" so when the user clicks on it, he/she is simply redirected to the post entitled "New race coming up!". This would mean the link 'topic' wouldn't contribute to the posters post count. It also saves time.

If the user had posted "New race coming up!" and then a copy is posted in another forum with the same information and then the original post (entitled "New race coming up!") is edited, then the copied of the post is different and may have inaccurate information. Basically, my suggestion eliminates the need for copies of posts.

God i'm making a concept so simple seem so complicated. I think i've gone on a bit but I hope you've understood at least some of what I just said.

Okay, I understand what you mean now. I personally would never use it, although it isn't a bad idea. I guess I am neutral on this one, so I just won't vote on it.

i think that meaning was -

You have a category for example, about Lineage. And you know some good page about Lineage, so you put in that category a forum, and when you click on that forum, it will lead you to that page.

Oh right. Yes I hadn't thought of that. But still a specialised feature would be useful.
