Would you be interested in using an SMS style chat plugin or forum theme ?
SMS Style Chat and Theme
This topic is now closed. You can find the new discussion topic for Forumactif Messenger here : help.forumotion.com/t152951-forumactif-messenger-instant-message-application-for-forumotion#1047237 Thanks for all your replies and support ! |
Recently I've been thinking that it'd be pretty neat to create a forum theme or plugin that's similar in style to SMS. This thought lead me to two ideas :
- We could create a plugin that designates a forum as an SMS chat forum. Topics in this forum will be turned into chats and messaging would be in real time, similar to the chatbox. (see draft below)
Old : https://gist.github.com/SethClydesdale/31f2d81947026ff294cf41785a068ee6 - The second idea I had would be to create a new forum theme in this style. Needless to say the theme will mostly be for chat based forums, since the focus is on short messages and a minimal design ; topics will pretty much look like my above example for the chat plugin.
I'd be willing to work on both of these, but I would like to see what the community thinks first. Would you be interested in using an SMS style chat plugin or forum theme if it were available ? Let me know your thoughts, or feel free to share your ideas if you have any ; I'd personally like to make this a collaborative community project.

Of course!! Voted Yes!
Although @Ange Tuteur if there was a possibility to reply as well it would be awesome. We can see the content but we can't really "type an SMS" as a reply!

Re: SMS Style Chat and Theme
great idea .... i will personally use the plugin cause my forum is more like an image gallery style
but a theme more or less like a chat room or like twitter will bring us more new members and definitely will make the difference
so my vote is YES
if i may i would suggest i private chat/tab/room for staff also

Re: SMS Style Chat and Theme
Great idea but I think about it really good for Chatbox and Private Message
Re: SMS Style Chat and Theme
Hello @Ange Tuteur ,
Still a wonderful idea my friend, I just installed this plugin on the EDGE version and it is fully compatible.
I also see the private side, if we could activate this plugin just for admins or other groups.
And the top of the top would be the answer my friend

Re: SMS Style Chat and Theme
This is like reviving long gong glory. Nice new look and not the latest of ideas, unfortunately. I asked for it back in 2014. I'll be voting soon. It's a new approach to existing chats, making use of hidden forums and / or profile fields the like. But we know about failed chat devs, don't we(?), like on yours (in conj. with Twisted) and AWC. We've seen it all and been there before. Anyway, I'm 'a bit' skeptical about who's gonna design and support it all. I mean like, it's not a the smallest of projects, ikr? When it comes down to designing, you and a few others may get credited for it, joys and yays, but what will happen after? What about support? If ever it 'll be up the gadgets forum on here as a new toy, or any of site to be displayed, I just know it will lack of any of support within a few years or anywhere soon ... as usual.... Will we still be able to contact the creators? Or will it all come down to the staff (whoever will be then) on here? That's one of my deepest of concerns ....
PS: Seems like you lost a lot of friends to back you (guys) up.........

I like the sound of this also
It would have to work with all the forums we have and as SWS has said all the support would be on your back as we would not have a foggy on the codes and how it's made. Do you really want to take all that on ?
But if your willing to take that all on then i would like to see this happen. so you have my vote

Awaiting his answer as I will be voting later on... Thanks for your support @APE
Re: SMS Style Chat and Theme
Voted YES. I tried the plugin on my forum and it works pretty nice.
Samantha got a point there. Not many people around bere are good to coding, and the ones that are good have not got enough time.
Anyway, @Ange Tuteur, I'd be happy to help you with the coding, designing, ideas, whatever you need.

Re: SMS Style Chat and Theme
@Luffy Haha yeah, that's something I need to add in. The draft was to give a quick demo of how it would look and work more or less.
@skouliki This'll be possible. The plugin will use forums to create topics (or "groups") to chat and the messages will be actual replies to these groups, so privacy is solely based on the permissions of the forum the plugin is enabled for. I'll make it so that you can use multiple forums in the plugin, that way you can have both a private staff and public chat.
@SarkZKalie I wont guarantee this yet, but there is the possibility we can interface this plugin with PMs. It's definitely something to consider.
@Milouze14 Indeed, I plan on supporting phpbb2, phpbb3, punbb, invision, fae, and modernbb. My reply to skouliki should interest you then. ^^
@SWS Ha it is reminiscent of the database project. Though this time we wont have the limitations that project imposed, since we'll be interfacing the plugin to use topics as they should be used ; for conversing with actual replies, not editing and updating a single post with JSON. Plus noscript-wise people can still converse with each other. Generally speaking, it's sort of like an SMS application for forums and their topics.. it may even be possible to turn it into an actual app, but I wont get ahead of myself.
Like most of my projects, it's going to be open source ; anyone can see, modify, and contribute to the source code. So as long as someone is around who wants to improve or fix something it'll always be supported -- even if I'm gone. Nihilistically speaking, nothing is guaranteed and nothing can be supported forever, in the end everything is bound to become abandonware eventually. How long that takes depends on a lot of factors, such as demand, lifespan of the developer(s), and whether or not Forumotion is still here five, tens, or hundreds of years from now. sorry to get so dark
@APE Hmm.. making it interface with all forums wouldn't be a bad idea. I'll have to make that an option, just in case people want to use it on their entire forum. I have no problem with taking on another project. After all, I've already taken on a similar burden with Forumactif Edge and have survived to tell about it.
@Wolfuryo true. Thanks, I'll be sure to let you know when I need a hand.

Re: SMS Style Chat and Theme
Will there be a module for guest chat? There has been some demand for that over the last years, yk (not me).
Re: SMS Style Chat and Theme
As usual you never cease to develop innovative content @Ange Tuteur. Thank you very much for doing something like this. Hm, might I suggest a built-in chat bubble color preference able to be set personally by a user and/or everyone by an admin. Perhaps a little silver star or something by the image of a moderator and a gold color star for an admin. I feel both of these would be great additions to your project
Re: SMS Style Chat and Theme
Considering that we're going by forum permissions, yes it will be possible to chat w/guests. Just have to do a little extra programming for sending the messages, but thankfully we can tell who is who w/_userdata.SWS wrote:Will there be a module for guest chat? Ah you mean like a preference other people can see, correct ? I think it can be done, by adding a preference table to the person's message, then the plugin can decided what to do with those preferences. I'll add it to my notes. It'll probably be something I add in later, after all the technical stuff is done.Legionheart wrote:Hm, might I suggest a built-in chat bubble color preference able to be set personally by a user and/or everyone by an admin. admin / mod status might be hard to identify since it's usually determined either by username color or rank. We definitely need to get the username color in as well as links to user profiles, then from there I believe those styles can be added without issue, although since admin colors vary from forum to forum it'll have to be a manual modification, probably.
P.S.
I updated the draft gist. Didn't get to adding message sending today, but getting closer.
- added ability to embed the chat app
- added actions bar, specifically for messaging (you'll see it's setup but not functional yet)
- changed chat_forum to chat_category
Instead of designating a forum, you can designate a category to use as your SMS chat forum. Should allow you to create forums ( or "groups" as I'm calling them now ) in this category with unique permissions.
Probably gonna setup the repo soon, since I've separated the CSS to another non-minified file for editing, and I might add more files as development continues.
Re: SMS Style Chat and Theme
Alright, voted, but pls. consider to have two extra options for it: LOGS, to prove certain chats to admins / moderators so they can take any of measures when needed and OFFLINE CHAT (members only ofc., w / notifications via e-mail or so).
It would be nice to have the 'options' installed in a modular way, like admins being able to install it like Edge, checking / unchecking certain modules thru check boxes. Building blocks like basic chat, staff only, members & staff, members, staff & guests, logs, language options, avatars, yk what I'm aiming at. And being able to roll up the lot.
Plus, let's not forget, styling needs to be moldable by any admin.

Well thanks for the replay Ange Tuteur well then yes i would love to see this open to every one and it sounds really good
Re: SMS Style Chat and Theme
Hello Ange Tuteur,
The last script is not functional on my test forum phpbb2 and EDGE,
I do not know if it comes from the English version on a French support !!
I hope you are still coffee Addict .
Thanks for the work .

Re: SMS Style Chat and Theme
The gist contains a draft or "demo" snippet. It's mainly for providing feedback.Ivan Ivanov wrote:Ange Tuteur, I can't figure out how to install.
It's not ready for production, but if you want to try it out you can install it. All you need to do is copy the code in the gist, then install it in JS Codes management.
Admin Panel > Modules > JS Codes Management > New > Placement : All pages
The messages are going to be actual replies to topics, so there's always going to be a log unless an admin or mod deletes those messages. Not sure about offline chat ? Do you mean like a desktop app ? 'cause I was looking at stuff for building cross-platform apps with JS, HTML, etc.. recently and figured I may be able to apply this to that down the road.SWS wrote:Alright, voted, but pls. consider to have two extra options for it: LOGS, to prove certain chats to admins / moderators so they can take any of measures when needed and OFFLINE CHAT (members only ofc., w / notifications via e-mail or so).

It's a long ways off before we get there, but I'll consider connecting the script to its Github repository so we can check for updates. As for managing the options, I may create a Github page for configuring the script.
No worries ; it can already be styled by admins. In fact, the CSS is at the end of the script currently.
Thanks for notifying me of this ; it's fixed now. I forgot some semicolons. I didn't catch this, because I was running the code in the console. ( not minified )Milouze14 wrote:Hello Ange Tuteur,

Re: SMS Style Chat and Theme
I tested the code from the gist on a default phpbb3 forum, and there are a lot of elements showing undefined. The only things that show correctly are the messages.

Re: SMS Style Chat and Theme
Hmm.. do you have the URL of this forum ? I ran some tests on all versions, since I made some major updates to the get functions and there were only some inconsistencies on phpbb2 and invision. Maybe it's because I redid the AJAX. (I replaced all 3 w/1 method called 'get')Wolfuryo wrote:I tested the code from the gist on a default phpbb3 forum, and there are a lot of elements showing undefined. Regardless, you can now find the latest @ https://github.com/SethClydesdale/forumactif-sms (under development)
If it still occurs, let me know.
Re: SMS Style Chat and Theme
I installed edge on that forum, updated the code and it isn't working(it shows undefined). I'll send you a PM with the forum link and the login details.

Re: SMS Style Chat and Theme
I ran a quick test and it appears to be working okay on my end. Try clearing your cache and try again to see if that may be the issue.
Re: SMS Style Chat and Theme
Seems to be working after clearing the cache. Thanks for the help, Ange!

Re: SMS Style Chat and Theme
Well, sort of @Ange Tuteur. I asked for a mobile chat app on AvacWeb back 2 yrs ago, but I got no answer on that. Would be a 'nice to have'. Anyway, yeah like an offline desktop app & notifications via mail an offline chat mssg was written by some member (like the PM notifications we get).
I got no access to your site aaaand I'd like to get it back to test stuff and read replies on what's going on regarding your current projects.
And no, as long as you're not willing to gimme back access to your site, I'm not willing to consider translating, testing the lot nor participating in any of your programs.

Re: SMS Style Chat and Theme
I managed to get around to programming in the message sending and receiving functionality today.
It's still experimental, but if you'd like to test it out follow the installation steps under this section. You can also find some detailed explanations on the config here. I'll continue expanding the config explanations as development continues, so feel free to test what's currently explained there.
Still lots to do, so I'll keep you guys updated on any progress made !
In regards to FM Design, that's another matter which I'll have to consider and discuss with my staff.

I see. We're definitely way off from making it an actual app, but I do have my sights set on electron.SWS wrote:Well, sort of @Ange Tuteur. Really interesting project, good luck with this!
Not a fan of pop-up features, I will probably use it via iframe. Maybe add an option for displaying it elsewhere?
