The Complete Mystery of Madeleine McCann™

First Impressions

  • My first impressions for your forum were good. The images that displays on your forum are very informative. Although for me it's quite confusing on the part of your forum logo since it displays information of people rather than the name of the forum. The forum theme you have chosen is simple but suits perfectly! I personally like the color and background since it's not eyesore for people like me who have glasses. Now moving to the forum itself, I like how you provide images with information but some of them are quite oversize making the forum big and quite long to load. I was amazed to your forum's activity. All i can say is that you have great people and staff members to manage a big community. Great work!

General Forum Appearance

  • As i have mention before, i really like the theme you have used although some images are quite oversize making the forum itself quite big and slow to load. If you could resize them or replace them with small but readable images then that would be great. So i think you don't need some major changes with your forum appearance since many forum users are use to the theme of your forum.

Forum Activity

  • Your forum activity is outstanding! Everyone knows that it's really hard to maintain a great activity. All i can say right now is great work and keep it up!

Staff & Usergroups

  • Your Staff and Usergroups are well organized and i can see that with that kind of community you'll be needing great amount of staff members. So good job!

Forum Originality

  • The theme you have used is probably the default phpBB silver, although you replace some of its default images with your desire one. But for me if you can put some unique features that would make your forum theme more unique and special you still have done an amazing work.

Forum Layout & Organization

  • You have 1 categories and they are all in that category. For me i would add some categories to make it more understandable as to what each category contains. Great work anyways.

Grammar & Spelling

  • Even though it's really hard to read everything since there's a lot of information that you've provided, i didn't see any mistake on grammar or spelling so good job!

Thank you for your time Aomine.

A disappointing review though after I'd taken on board all the suggestions from the last review and, with skouliki's help, made the forum look so much better with new graphics.

Might I ask why is this review disappointing? It looks to me that you got a very good review.

Post by jkh on October 15th 2017, 6:44 am

Hello BlackScorpion

Yes, I agree the review is very good, but there were some comments within the review that I was disappointed with.

1. First Impressions
My first impressions for your forum were good. Great work!

The forum name is very prominently placed on the forum header. Hard to miss I would have thought...? The idea of putting people with their quotes up the top is that it immediately 'hits' people with what's going on with the case, and as they scroll down they're 'hit' with even more disturbing information about the death of a little girl.

2. General Forum Appearance
As i have mention before, i really like the theme you have used although some images are quite oversize making the forum itself quite big and slow to load. If you could resize them or replace them with small but readable images then that would be great. So i think you don't need some major changes with your forum appearance since many forum users are use to the theme of your forum.

I'm not sure what Aomine meant by 'some of the images are quite oversize making the forum itself quite big and slow to load', or which images s/he means that should be replaced. There is only one image that is quite big, and that's the forum header. But because of the nature of the forum it needs to 'hit' people, especially those new to the case. I have never had any negative feedback on the forum being slow to load.

3. Forum Originality
The theme you have used is probably the default phpBB silver, although you replace some of its default images with your desire one. But for me if you can put some unique features that would make your forum theme more unique and special you still have done an amazing work.

I don't know what Aomine means by adding some 'unique features'. The content of the forum is what makes it unique and special. It is an investigative forum of a very serious crime. I have added images in the right hand sidebar in the form of widgets that tell the story of what happened to Madeleine McCann using quotes from the people involved. I feel that is a 'unique feature', and very fitting for what the forum is all about. It is not a 'graphic design' or a 'gaming' forum - it is an investigative forum that hosts a lot of information and shows a lot of information without the need to register, so I'm not sure what 'unique features' it needs to make the forum theme more unique and special. It is about information rather than 'looks', if you get my drift...?

4. Forum Layout & Organization
You have 1 categories and they are all in that category. For me i would add some categories to make it more understandable as to what each category contains. Great work anyways.

Yes, I agree that there is only 1 category - I made that mistake when I created the forum and don't know how to get around it now. I also don't think it's too much of a problem because the main category describes what the forum is about and all the forums within it relate to the subject - well, apart from a few at the bottom! But each category is quite clearly labelled as to what it contains and it also has a description of what people will find inside.

I've spent many, many hours trying to make the best of the forum, trying to make it look professional. It is more of a 'Filing Cabinet' of research, analysis and general information. The subject matter and the content speaks for itself I think. I have tried to pack as much information on the HomePage and Portal for those that don't wish to register, but can still get a very good idea of what this heinous crime is about. One day the forum will be read-only, but all the information will be saved and it is all placed in the relevant categories for ease of research, past, present and future.

After spending so much time re-vamping the forum from last years' review I suppose I was hoping for 10/10 so I was disappointed with 7/10 and 8/10 in the areas I'd spent a lot of time.

I thank Forumotion very much for allowing me to create a FREE forum for this very important purpose. I am most grateful. And many thanks to the wonderful skouliki for her help and advice - she is a real diamond. :rose:

Remember, reviews are only someone's opinion and not fact. Not everything is always right; I've been wrong plenty of times xD It's just some comments to help grasp what others may think Smile

I'll try to provide a review in the next few days. And thank you for creating the forum Smile

Hello @jkh,

I would like to apologize with the matter that you're not satisfied with my review. As what Elementar said It's just my own opinion and not fact that you really need to do. Every people have their different ideas/opinions that may like or may not like by others.

Again, I apologize for the upset and still thank you for choosing Forumotion.

The Complete Mystery of Madeleine McCann

First Impressions

  • My first impressions of your forum were quite impressive. It seems like a lot of thought and effort has been put into the forum's whole structure, which is likely to encourage guests to join as this establishes a connection with the creator of the forum. However, some people may be intimidated by the seriousness of the forum. The subject of the forum is quite serious, but I personally feel like a pop-up message spurring a member to join this great cause or a message somewhere below the forum title might be enough to persaude some guests to join the forum. Additionally, I'd like to see a larger and differently styled forum title. The images at the top do gain the attention of a guest, but it's also helpful if the forum title also attracts attention. This can be done with colour or a different font.

General Forum Appearance

  • Your forum appearance is quite impressive. The image sizes are as small as they can be to see them clearly, however, those with bad internet may have trouble loading them. If they don't load, the text also is misplaced in the forum listing and is uneven. The decision to have some of these images at the top are great for the theme overall, as it spreads out the pictures and gives the theme some variety. I also like the substitute for forum icons with the images. It again shows off the effort put into the forum. The colours of the theme are quite suitable and well chosen. The text is easy to see on the grey background.

Forum Activity

  • Your forum activity is extremely impressive. Your forum does not have a common subject, and despite its nature as a news and discussion forum, the activity is very large. There are many posts within the past few days, and without any seemingly immediate major news. People are staying around and continue to post, with a huge amount of people logging in each day. This is encouraging for the future.

Staff & Usergroups

  • Your staff aren't as active as the other members of your forum. I'd suggest trying to get them more involved with the forum and making sure they maintain activity. I can't access the usergroups as a guest, but each group are necessary and suitable for the forum. However, the owner colour appears to be very similar to the normal members colour. This means it stands out less. I'd personally like to see to see the owner usergroup have a colour that is different and stands out more.

Forum Originality

  • Your forum's subject is really unique. It has a great cause, and the community behind it is very special. Your sections are really well planned and different to a lot of similar-styled forums. The text along the right side of the page is a great idea, and you've utilised every opportunity you can to put more information about the subject.

Forum Layout & Organization

  • Your forum layout is good. The placement of the widgets is great, and the structure of the forum listing is quite good. However, it is too long without any segregation. This should be able to be fixed with the help of someone on the support team. Because of this long forum listing, navigation is quite difficult, and things can be lost in the mass of text. That's the only major issue though.

Grammar & Spelling

  • Despite having a large amount of text on the homepage, I couldn't locate any spelling or grammatical errors.

This is encouraging for the future.

[*]Your staff aren't as active as the other members of your forum.

[*]Your forum's subject is really unique. It has a great cause, and the community behind it is very special. Your sections are really well planned and different to a lot of similar-styled forums. The text along the right side of the page is a great idea, and you've utilised every opportunity you can to put more information about the subject.

[*]Your forum layout is good.

Forum Layout & Organization
Grammar & Spelling

  • Hello,

  • Don't get discouraged because of some reviews. Your forum is one-of-a-kind and due to the amount of information you'd like to provide, the 'usual' forum layouts are a bit out of question for you. Thus, the visitors may get a bit surprised at first glance.
  • You've gotta decide if you're ready to compromise; so either you give up on some details or keep everything as it is. Smile

  • If one looks at your forum they undoubtedly can see its own charm, so even if you won't change anything it would be fine. And to be honest, I don't think people go there for the design. It deals with a very specific and serious topic and I believe people are there for the content instead of the design. It is a great thing and not many people find such a topic! If you have a forum that has a hot topic, having a nice look is just a so to say bonus.

  • Actually, despite of what some of the others said, I like the informative pictures next to each forums. I think they are needed and make the mass of sections listed a bit 'colorful'.

  • An advice, if I were you, I'd try to change the forum's version to the new ModernBB provided by Forumotion. Not sure if you've seen it, but it has the appearance a forum in 2017 should have, and without putting too much effort into designing you'd have an appealing and modern forum. Webdesign has its trends just like fashion does and now some little details make your forum's look a bit dated. Smile

  • Other than the design, I think you know what you are going, because you have many members connected and loooots of posts, which is brilliant, really. You should be proud of yourself, you managed to build something that got many people's attention and made them join your community. Again, don't be sad, just because some people or I would change this or that on your forum, you can never please everyone. Very Happy

@jkh All the work you have done has paid off immensely. Your graphics are great, and for me personally, that's not why the first impressions went down. It was for the other reasons expressed in there. I've also personally grown as a reviewer since then, so I might've picked up more things this time than last time. Other than the first impressions, it's basically just the extensive forum listing and confusion that's letting you down. But overall, it's a fantastic result and very impressive. Trust me, getting over 9 is great Smile
