No more swearing.

Post by Lydia on June 15th 2008, 11:21 pm

I think that swears should be edited out, or censored. You only have to be 13 to go on this site, so 13 year-olds shouldn't have to see all these swears, or anyone for that matter. And in one thread, an admin even called a member a swear. Do you think that swears should censored? Question

I havent seen any swearing on here, maybe swear words are not the same words in all countries. What you see as swearing may just be normal conversation somewhere else.

I won't vote simply because I haven't seen any swearing on here. Different countries interpret different words differently. (I hope that made sense).

My understanding is that it is an option for admin to enable pick up and replacement words - I am not a fan of those emotions and the other characters that are used

regarding own forums - edit any reported swearing and notify the poster
Also add the word into your swear box on you site and put **** in it's place.

Swearing is not gonna validate your point - and more likely will have an adverse effect as well as show disrespect.

Besides Gordon Bennet when verbally used properly works well.
funny how many atheists say OMG!

I'm new and wanted to deal with this issue. Searched and found this thread and did not see the point in re-inventing the wheel, besides easter is a great time for a resurrection .
It is not a closed poll and I gave enough information for backing it dragonintel.
Is there a problem with highlighting this?
If it is out of date it should be locked as solved or dismissed etc.
It seems you are suggesting something by your question - Breaking protocol??
If so would you please be direct.
Thanks

I voted yes on this because: In the TOS you're not allowed to create a forum unless you are 13 years of age or older, so why should it be any different on the support forum? Wink
This shouldn't have been dug up but hey, nothing you can do now Razz

Why not pogosheep?
No offense, but it's not clear, your statement is more of an edict or fiat. I am not offended per se, and I may have missed something regarding old threads - anyway this old (53) Fred is just asking politely.

It's an open topic therefore it's up for discussion IMO
I ask because there are many oldies (threads/freds) that I may be viewing and adding my thoughts to.
However I will not charge the usual 0.02 subject to reply/s. I reserve the right to invoice at a later date - no later than 3 months - without prejudice! Smile Smile

Most of the swearing comes from the Admin. Not that it bothers me LOL, but reg. members are told by mods to not swear.
Guess it's a perk of having your name that lovely shade of orange Razz

i think this is a good thread myself, and its one that is not easy to answer. I dont allow any swearing on my forum, but then the people who use my forums dont have the desire to anyway. This depends i think what kind of age group you have on your forum to how you should answer this. Agree with it or not, swearing is part of the culture now in the young ones, and they dont see it as anything bad. Just like years ago, if you said bloody or damn, this was seen as swearing, but now its nothing.

Swearing really is just a form of expression, so to ban it completely if your members are teens, then that would be a mistake, so long as its not racial or hate orientated, i think its fine, to us 30 somethings though swearing just makes the board untidy and seem trivial and this is why i wont allow it as my members are older.

[soapbox]You can view it as immature, unintelligent, and expressive. Frankly I think it is an extremely rare occasion where it is used to make a point. Yes it develops at a young age (picked up from adults), but why weaken our vocabulary rather than strengthen it. So many great words that can be used instead. English in particular has been enriched via many cultures/colonies, what is the point of being rude and a best base by uttering/shouting vulgarities. (IMO)
Frankly any support or acceptance for swearing is talking to my hand.
[/soapbox]
btw - my forum is for all ages, it will be considered offensive.

I asked a Dutch mother to ask her son to use unoffensive language at our house - we have a two and a half year old that's learning fast. She immediately explained to the boy who understood exactly. The mother then looks at her watch and says S*** while running to the door.
The Dutch use it but see it as not swearing. The English like to use the French equivalent pretentiously!!!

I probably have said enough in this topic now - best to unsubscribe.
