HTML redirection of homepage

Post by Guest on July 2nd 2008, 8:31 pm

When you create an HTML page, you are giving the option to add it as your homepage however if you do this then you loss your forum index.
Instead of the main forum the html page replaces it thus you lose your forum.

Why not change this so that the forum itself then changes address so that you can still access the main forum

Example

Before HTML Homepage Is Set:

Your home page is;
www.whatever.com

After HTML Homepage Is Set:
www.whatever.com/forum

This then means you can still link into the main forum aswell as have your homepage!!!!!!!

If your confused please post and i will try my best to explain..

I agree. I'm not sure if this was a mistake or not. If it was done on purpose, it's not quite fair to make a user choose between having a homepage or a forum.

I think you guys are making your html pages in the wrong place!!
an html page cannot replace your forum... that is impossible.

if you make a html page properly then the homepage is displayed as:
your address.com, and your forum would be
your address.com/index.

placehold, the html cannot replace the forum. Go to your modules, create a portal, but make only 2 boxes. a footer and header. then paste your ready made HTML page in the header ... this will replace your portal with your html page...

your forum will be under youraddress.com.index...

I did this with my old site... i had a homepage with CSS and HTML loaded on a free FTP provider... whilst my forum stayed as it were.

Nope its highly possible

Think we're thinking about two different things lol

I dont want a portal, i want a homepage, a customized welcome page which then links into the forum

I have programmed for years now however because i am not willing to pay for the html templates at the moment i cant adjust or address the problem codes lol

Actually, it does. Select Yes in the "Use as homepage?" field while editing one of
your HTML pages. You'll find that your forum is now redirected from the index to the HTML page, which is quite annoying.

Also, in my case, I wanted to keep the portal "as is" and have the on-forumotion HTML page as the homepage(I'm greedy like that Razz ), but this glitch/problem prevents it.

No you are doing it wrong....

look at what i wrote... you can't save the html via the forumotion...!! well you can write it there but you mustn't save it....

what you do is have the html in a notepad for example... just the html code... you can write it in the forumotion editor... modules -> html management

but you take the code from there... copy the entire code...

then go to modules -> portal structure -> new
create 2 boxes accross the whole portal... no columns...

name 1 box footer, name the other header...
paste your html into the header on the portal structure and save

^^ that will replace the portal... don't click any use as hompage...
if you want to add more pages just use the built in html page creator... but don't set as homepage... copy the links to your portal hopmepage

I hope this is clear

No problem... it's good that you understood me...
I see your portal is almost ready ... just a couple centering problems...
I remember there was a thread on how to remove the top bar , nav bar and footer from the portal.... but i don't remember it now.

i like your html page... it looks sexy

thank you Smile

I cant seem to get rid of most of the tables and such, m going to play around with the css a little and make a template to make it easier for everyone else. I feel it should still be raised so you can use the "Make this my homepage" link in the html section , it should replace the portal perhaps?!

I created the page using html and css however its supposed to look like this

www.placehold.webs.com

Ok guys the tables wont move, if i change the CSS it works however it effects the forum cause its all from one CSS sheet

What i am requesting is the option in the HTML section of the admin panel to set the HTML page as the homepage actually activates and replaces the portal when selected!!!!!

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaasssssssssseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee do this one thing for me

Re: HTML redirection of homepage

Post by Guest on July 7th 2008, 1:31 pm

Ok guys i went that step further and duplicated both the CSS and HTML used by forumotion for my main forum

I am now going to prove the point!

I added a HTML page using the HTML code used for my main forum section
www.techwebsupport.com (alternatively www.techwebsupport.com/index)
to which i renamed "forum"

I then set my customized homepage to "Index", i then added direct links to "forum" and was advised by several people here that the forum will still work that i was coding wrongly

Ok so say i was coding wrongly, the "Homepage" works brilliant and the "forum" shows as it should, now here's the kicker ...............

...............Non of the links held on the main forum work! This code i used for the "forum" i will remind everyone is the direct HTML code used by forumotion and this is because .......

The main forum is taking over by the HTML page and you loss the main forum!!!!

I also tried the portal, needless to say i wasn't happy with the way it came out, wasn't easy but it looked like hell, all the font sizes all over the place and images out of shape depending on what browser you used.

Can someone pleasssssssssssssssse apply the same function used by the portal to the HTML pages so when you set the HTML page to "Homepage" it doesn't take over the forum.....

you can check this out for yourself by visiting my forum page www.techwebsupport.com and selecting the last link "Forum" if you select any of the main forum sections it will take you back to the homepage but will show you the link in the url bar, strange!
and no this is not advertisement i am trying to get people to understand what is happening here so please don't delete the link...

I also want to thank everyone for their input Smile

Regards

I haven't used any syntax mainly because i didnt want to slow the page down. My idea was to keep the HTML page fast and and light and then maybe allow the forum to be slightly slower by adding syntax into the CSS

Oh and the problem is solved Very Happy
