IPB Board is basically Invision, which is hosted by Forumotion.
vBulletin is excellent and is not ugly. I have a forum called CodForum which we switched over to vBulletin. It looks great
phpBB really is very nice design. Some things could be updated though, such as the 20th century memberlists. But overall it's intuitive and nice, and it's a great choice for a forumer.

Re: phpBB VS vBulletin VS IPB
Its like saying:
What smells better? Cow poop, horse poop, or rotten cabbage?
IPB reminds me of a less fugly SMF. That being said I haven't had much of a chance to really dig into it. Couldn't ever afford it.
vBulletin is nice, from a user perspective. From an admin perspective... nnnrrg...
phpBB is just plain horrid all around. It's a nightmare to administrate, and I don't even like being on a phpBB forum as a user.
In the world of computers, everything sucks. Its just that some things suck slightly less than others.
Personally, I prefer a system called MyBB. It's nice to administrate, simple and clean on the user end. Just.. a bit of a mess develop on..

I should have voted for Simple Machines Forum. My most active forum is currently using SMF and it's great!

SMF is okay. The design is not too bad.
However, design is trivial as most designs can be recreated anywhere with CSS and/or Javascript. What's more important when choosing a provider is services (support, graphics, etc.), features, and performance.
Forumotion provides excellent features - that is why Forumotion is one of the largest forum providers on the web

I look at different forum services as
1. A software
2. A host
Comparing Forumotion and Simple Machines, I will choose SMF because it is a software, and as a software much more options and downloadable packages are available for your forum. Also, you do not have to use the themes SMF provides for you. You can use a phpbb theme, or Raven Nuke if you would really like to.
But yeah, Forumotion is also a great option.

Re: phpBB VS vBulletin VS IPB
vBulletin is much better because it is more professional, but hard to use
but in phpbb it is much easier to use and it is also free.

Re: phpBB VS vBulletin VS IPB
Certainly IPB, in the event that we are referring to This year. I'd say any experienced website owner would prefer IPB 3 over vbulletin 4, only the proven fact that I've seen a few big discussion boards transition from VB to IPB due to how useless vb4 was kinda exhibits it is much better. (eg. se7ensins)
vb 3.8 is a superb forum software program and I had been utilizing vb since the beginning, it's great due to it's abundance of mods, skin as well as community. But with vb4, these people basically started more than and that got everything great regarding vb. As well as vb4 wasn't something groundbreaking or mind blowing. The moment We saw IPB Three I loved it, and when I recorded in to the admin solar panel this blew my mind. It had been incredible, and I still think it's the greatest. Not to mention it is community is growing rapidly and there tend to be ton's of mods and skin being released for it every day.
In the end I love IPB due to it is looks and simplicity of use when compared with vbulletin.

My former favorite forum was vBulliton, and it was a nice forum. I use phpBB for my forums though, so I voted for that.
Re: phpBB VS vBulletin VS IPB
I like ForuMotion Invision out of the ones, not just ForuMotion, I have used.

Re: phpBB VS vBulletin VS IPB
I voted VB (Vbulletin) simply because it is the safest and most reliable forum out there. However it is wicked expensive.
If I was to compare it to forumotion then I'd say forummotion wins hands down. They are an excellent service and you can create and maintain the forum for around £40 a year at first then its only a slight increase in money afterwards.
Overall Forumtoin is the best free forum hosting service because it does give you what you need and is reliable.
However, if we're talking about paid forums then I'd go with Vbulletin.

I like phpBB, but I'm personally more of a myBB guy. myBB has really come a long way recently, and is overall a very nice forum software option.

Re: phpBB VS vBulletin VS IPB
I voted for other software, because I think, that the best forum software is WoltLab Burning Board - and I changed from forumotion to WBB.
WBB has a good administration panel, lots of functions and plugins, and looks quite good and modern
