Rank Permissions

Post by paint on August 2nd 2008, 8:43 pm

Groups have permissions but its hard to change around what member is in what group. There should be rank permissions, so when you reach one rank by posting, you automatically get these extra features, or can view more forums, etc.

Make the ranks have permissions- so if you have this much posts your rank goes up and then the permissions you can set it will change- Basically, you can set permissions to ranks like you can to groups.

Check your facts (As Caihlem would say)

We're not talking about special ranks, we're talking about post ranks, what you said makes absolutely no sense.

For example if you had a rank of officer in your forum and you needed 100 posts.

When you reached 100 posts (officer rank) you would gain access to an Officer forum.

Or something like that.

Sure.

I could see having like a 10,000 post club and they get access to the 10,000 posts section maybe.

What timmy said- basically, like groups- when you reach 100 posts, you will get this rank and have access to this forum, etc. This way you don't have to move people around in groups, and no I don't mean moderator by posts.

Also, it will encoruage psoting as I have many users that dont post but read topics.

In addition, if they do spam, it will just lower their chances and give them warnings so if they spam they know the consequences.

Still, I wouldn't use anything like this in my forum, I don't see the point.

Yes, it would encourage people posting useless posts just for the sake of increasing their post count. This is a double-edged sword, as on the one hand it would mean increased forum activity, but on the other hand would mean a lot of garbage that isn't contributing anything. However, forum staff can and probably should discourage that, perhaps handing out punishments for members that just flood the boards with junk posts. So, if the forum administration finds users going around posting "yup", "ditto", "no wai", or emoticons as the entire contents of their posts, they could warn, delete, and maybe punish for such behavior if it continues.

Besides, surely it would be an optional feature, like so many things for the forums, so if someone was concerned about it they could simply not use the option for their boards.

However people would want to get their normal post count up anyway? So if they wanted to they could spam to get their rank up, just because they will be put in a group wouldn't change if they wanted lots of posts.

Re: Rank Permissions

Post by Christos on September 10th 2008, 8:38 pm

Hey,

My Vote is negative.
I found that something meaningless. A Forum is not an RPG Game and you don't have to grant your users ranks like that.
If your forum is small you can do it yourself with your mods and other staff and be careful who you give a rank to.
If your forum is big you can have special staff for that or have more moderators.

I think something like that will be meaningless *repeating myself*

Edit: Do not be mistaken by the votes, those who are negative didnt vote.

Regards,
Christos

Still, you don't need to use it- I'm saying it as an option for people to customize not a mandatory thing to do.

Not that bad,
Though, I am still negative with the main Idea of this thread... I want to have control over who I give ranks to.

I vote yes, and in my forum I had to make groups for those with 50 posts - 250 posts - 500 posts and it gets annoying making sure I add members who got the number into the groups all the time.
