Add a spell checker to the admin panel?

Post by Mrs S on October 5th 2008, 3:10 am

I am a member of several different forums who's members can't spell so it makes reading their posts fairly difficult, one forum had that many complaints about people's spelling mistakes that they installed a spell checker and the quality of the post dramatically improved. Would it be possible to add a spell checker to the admin panel that can be activated or deactivated by the admin? It would be joined to the text box icons so that it can be used every time a person makes a post or sends a pm. Do you think they're a good idea?

Would it be better if we just use Firefox with a spell checker? It saves the techies more time and can focus on other projects.

I use Mozilla and yes it would be helpful if everyone used it but not everyone likes it, and as Admin of my own forum I don't always have time to check everyone's posts for spelling errors. If there was one on the admin panel that could be activated and added to the text box icons then at least that way the poster can check their own spelling.

We're all members of forums with members that can't spell. Terrible grammar and poor punctuation runs rampant, too. Firefox is awesome because of its built-in spell-checker, but I still vote "yes" here. Now, if only we could somehow make members use spell-check....

I run Firefox [up to date] and I have spell checker installed. It works on all sites I use, even this site, but for some reason, it doesn't always work on my own forum...

so for this reason, and the fact that so many people still prefer to use IE, I'd like to see a Spell Checker introduced - and have a little button above where you type your posts, so you can click and check before submitting!

I only say no, because they should work on adding other features first.
sure this would be useful in the future, even though i wouldnt use it. but it wouldnt harm me, since its an on/off feature.
however, like i said, they should work on more important updates first. besides, mozilla firefox has a spell check just like microsoft word. I think a grammar check is way more important.
example: people say know instead of no alot. spell check wouldnt pick that up.
their, there, they're - spell check wouldnt pick that up.
you're, your - spell check wouldnt pick that up.
im just more worried about things like that, other than misspelling.

again, this feature wouldnt hurt, but they need to work on other things first.

Hmm, isn't there something already like this called the WYSIWYG Mod in the admin panel, that you can easily activate?

Firefox and Safari have a spell checker. Tell them to get either one of those.

I never gave this a second thought as I use Mozilla Firefox which has a built in spell checker. But I do see your frustration. A spell checker would be a very good addition. A vote for Yes from Me.

You are very rude, have you bothered to read my original post or any of my replies? because if you had you would have seen that I have already said that I do use firefox and I can spell, I'm thinking of others, other that are younger than me, for example who are still at school, still going through their education who perhaps can't spell correctly as you put it. Try reading the replies instead of just the title in future.

There posts may look neater, but that want a count for sentence structure or grammar.

^^ no spelling errors in that sentence but it isn't correct Wink
I'm just making a point.

If they can't spell they shouldn't be on your forum. I am yet to come across a 13 year old that can't use basic grammar or spelling.

If they are under 13, they shouldn't be on your forum.

Lucky for you that you don't have any issues with dyslexia.
my spouse has a genius IQ but can't spell for anything.
and my soon to be 13 year old is in honors english and honor roll, but occasionally has spelling errors.
Until someone can fully understand disgraphic issues, they shouldn't make declarations.

personally, I think people getting all worked up over spelling is a waste of time.
but to each their own.

Re: Add a spell checker to the admin panel?

That's a good point, also a lot of kids are so used to typing in text talk they've "forgotten" how to spell. I don't know about everyone else but text talking on a forum irritates the hell out of me and makes some posts unreadable.

Why shouldn't I have under 13 on my forum? I haven't set an age limit as I didn't see the need for one, they have their own sections and do not have access to the adult sections, they can't even see them. There's nothing anywhere, as far as I've seen, that states you can only allow people over a certain age to join your forum.
