ctrl-click element among a list?

Post by jaebaeli on November 27th 2008, 11:23 am

Is there a code that will allow me to use the "an element among a list" feature in personalized profile, wherein members can ctrl-click what they need to out of the list? When i try to use this choice, it presents a problem with null choices.

I tried to make the whole list of choices available on 14 different fields, but this didn't work. If i just offer one choice for each, I'm not sure that will work either for null choices, as it will present as some kind of text in that null space.

Thanks in advance for any help.
Jae

I found a code that comes close to what i want, but it doesn't allow the ctrl-click more than one element in that list...anyone know how to tweak this to achieve my goal? here's the partial code
Code:
<br><img src="URL image"/>: Novels
<img src="URL image"/>: Short Stories
<img src="URL image"/>: Technical

I tried using this code
Code:
<select>
<option>Select</option>
<option>Novels</option>
<option>Short Stories</option>
<option>Technical</option>
</select>

...which is supposed to create a selection list like I'm after, but all it did was show up code and all in a box in which nothing could be selected.
Could someone please help with this? I'm doing all i can, and i know there's a code for this...i can't begin to promote my forum until this is solved.

Okay, I used my WYSIWYG webpage program to create a box like this and pasted the html in the personalized profile area again (had to delete it all and refresh and start over, since it would not change in my profile AGAIN). The preview in the admin/pers.profile shows the box and it was clickable and the ctrl-click also worked there. But when i looked in my profile, it was just a box with the raw HTML.

HOW do i get that code to operate instead of display as text in the profile?

So, no one has a solution for this? A suggestion?

Maybe someone can at least tell me what the code parameters are in that enriched text box? How do i use code there, why does it show as text only? do i need the entire html code or just part of it? what parts do i leave in? what parts do i leave out?

Will some one PLEASE give me a hand, here? I can figure out most of the code, just why it won't show up properly in the profile.
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

I dont have a code of the top of my head however you might want to try looking for a code that will give you a list where the function to select multiple items is already there without pressing ctrl

Try searching for

"Select multiples in list,html"

Thanks Craig--I'll go check that out now...
Appreciate your response!
Jae

UPDATE:
Same problem- all scripts I try show as the script text, and not the selection box, in the profile.
Any other suggestions?

All i can do is ask the coding people to tell me how to make html code work in their personalized profiles. It says I can use it, yet a standard menu list code will not work there. Why can't someone tell me what form to put the code in?
The last one I tried was
Code:
<select name="ListBox1" size="4" multiple="multiple"
id="ListBox1" style="height:113px;width:141px;Z-INDEX:
103; LEFT: 158px; POSITION: absolute; TOP: 49px">
  <option value="Novels 0">Item 0</option>
  <option value="Short Stories 1">Item 1</option>
  <option value="Technical 2">Item 2</option>
 </select>

Why won't this work?

Nope.didn't work.

Now, I'm trying to alter the template code for the profile. I still haven't figured out where to put it to get it to be another question in the profile list on the registration page (preferably below the last entry, like BIRTHDAY).
I've been able to get it to show on the profile page, but it ends up above the list of questions or below it, and I wnat it to be within that list. I might need some extra code to get it to work, but dont' knwo what that is. This is the code I'm using:
Code:
<SELECT NAME="Genres in which you write? (ctrl-click all that apply)" MULTIPLE SIZE=14>
<OPTION VALUE="Novels">Novels
<OPTION VALUE="Short Stories">Short Stories
<OPTION VALUE="Technical">Technical
<OPTION VALUE="Business">Business
<OPTION VALUE="Academic">Academic
<OPTION VALUE="Scientific/Medical">Scientific/Medical
<OPTION VALUE="Copy/Advertising">Copy/Advertising
<OPTION VALUE="scripts">scripts
<OPTION VALUE="Journalism">Journalism
<OPTION VALUE="Memoir">Memoir
<OPTION VALUE="Humor">Humor
<OPTION VALUE="Essay/Blog">Essay/Blog
<OPTION VALUE="Reviews">Reviews
<OPTION VALUE="Poetry/Lyrics">Poetry/Lyrics
</SELECT>

Does anyone know what I need to change or add, and where in the profile template it goes? I'm assuming it goes in the profile_add_body code?

The only reason I'm trying it this way is because no one knows how to tell me to do it under personalized profile (refer to previous posts)--the code never works.

Hello!!!?????????
Is anyone who knows about this out there?
Why doesn't anyone know? It's a coding issue. I can't believe none of the code-people know what can and cannot be in the various boxes in admin.

Uhm, I'm not sure if I understood that all right.

But did you try out the different add options? Because "An element among a list" looks like that what you wanted.

Maybe it helps. If not it won't harm you I assume.

But hey, after all your codes you found you can afterwards write a HUGE tutorial for that^^

Well MrKG, in order to fully appreciate the breadth of this issue, you'd have to read all my previous posts on it, leading to this one. I've tried ALL options (started with elements in a list, as a matter of fact), ALL panels, ALL templates, and a plethora of different codes and code-forms, and still cannot get anyone to answer the simplest of questions such as, "Why won't standard codes work in the admin panel, when they will work on blogs and on other web pages?"

Well, I read all posts but I find it hard to follow. I am sorry.

"Why won't standard codes work in the admin panel, when they will work on blogs and on other web pages?"

Yeah, I know that problem. Keep on it. I take a look on that tomorrow again and try your codes out.

MrKG- HEre's a simplified explanation:::

all I'm after is a selection box in the profiles that allow members to select more than one thing from a list, so that this information will show up in their profile next to posts.

Problem: none of the standard codes for this will work in any part of the admin panel I've tried.

i have been trying for you jaebaeli and i am finding the same thing, i suspect it may not be possible, because when adding a personalized profile option it automatically puts a table in and shows the code as the table content. I will keep having a go though, if i find a way i will post it up.

I appreciate you letting me know--that was also part of the problem--not knowing. I would be grateful if you found it and let me know. otherwise, my goal is the same--maybe there's another way to do it I don't know about.
Thanks for you help.

maybe you need to enable the html I guess?
AP>General>Messages and Emails> Configuration.
Enable radio button for Allow HTML.
I know this post's unanswered since last year... Razz
