Moving My Site
I would like to know what steps i would need to move my site. I know i would obviously need to move all the code and pages, but how can i do that and how can i move my mysql (presume it's mysql) database. Using phpBB2 (subsilver). A reply would be appreciated ASAP.

Hi shatter_resistant
What do you mean? Combining two forums together, or just changing the version of your forum?

Dream on Shatter im afraid this is a very old argument about who owns all your posts in the database.... and its not you. Forumotion just wont allow you to take your posts away from them, if they did then a lot more people just wouldnt be here now.
Im sorry to tell you but if you want to keep your current forum with its posts, you have to stay with forumotion. to move away, you really do have to start from scratch
Sorry

To move the actual forum to a different host

Re: Moving My Site
No you cant move anything away sorry, your forum and posts the way forumotion see it, do not belong to you. So if you leave, you cant have them, you have to wave them goodbye and start from the very beginning again. This subject as been in many topics in the past, and caused many a heated debate.
Thats Dumb
thats stupid cause peoples opinions are their own not forummotion

Re: Moving My Site
Well yes you have a point, as well as all the other arguments that have been brought forward over this issue, but im afraid that's just the way it is, and i know myself with almost 10,000 posts on my forum but im not allowed to have them if i want to move to my own hosted forum. I'd have to start from scratch too.
It sucks, but there nothing you can do about it.

Re: Moving My Site
I moved away from forumotion leaving 130,000 posts here
Still, best thing ive ever done regarding my forum.

Re: Moving My Site
Well thats good to know pogo, glad you are happy, thing is have you run any other forum other than a forumotion one and can compare the difference. I am currently running two other forums, and a coppermine gallery which i host independently, and the experience is a lot better. ive no ads, i can save my database to my pc as my own backup, so i never lose a single post or file. I have complete control over every last thing, even the database management.
there really is no comparison. Yes i know this is free, and i have a fairly active spiritual forum, but i always feel as if my posts are held to ransom and at any minute something could go wrong and i could lose everything. or like what happened the otherday , silly ads get put right smack in the middle of all the posts in the forum and i can do nothing.
Having a forum here is a bit like playing at it rather than having control of what is yours to start with. Posts like any other medium are copyrighted to who ever wrote them, but you arent allowed to keep them. you have to accept that, but until you run your own forum on your own host then you really cant know the difference.

If you wish to know more about the ForuMotion Database click here
Also, you cannot move / relocate your forum.
Nor can you "transfure" into ForuMotion without talking to Typlo (An admin here)

Re: Moving My Site
Lol, i think we've already got that bit of information there daz, tell us something we dont know, and the database info blurb doesn't help as it just confirms what i already said. (in a roundabout way)
just dont get attached to your posts because you dont know if you will ever see them again as forumotion doesn't even have to restore your database if it doesn't want to.....
Im sure forumotion will love you for reminding people of that.
