Suggestion for Hitskin, Support Uploading of templates with the styles.

Post by dragonintel on August 13th 2009, 11:27 pm

Here is an idea that I came up with when browsing tealeaf.

How about when you upload a phpbb2 or punbb theme, you can choose for it to upload your site's template edits too.

This would greatly enhance the quality of themes that are uploaded with these versions.

Thanks for reading

phpBB2 and punBB can be somewhat useless compared to phpBB3 and Invision, so Template Editing was added to allow more flexibility. The problem is your edited templates will not show up if you upload the theme to HitSkin making phpBB2 and punBB very unattractive to users.

ya.... and some themes are so totally dependent on template edits that they will not look good at all without the correct edits.

Well not all punbb and phpbb2 themes are dependant on templates. Placehold's simple hold was made with punbb before templates came out so it still works fine

that is an insult.
phpbb2 ... well maybe not phpbb2 but punBB is not pretty much useless.
I enjoy 3 of the 4 versions all are perfect if you set your mind to it.

But anyway

I like and dislike the idea.
I like the idea for the additional style coding.
But I dislike the fact that javascript and other personalized coding will get transfered with it.
thus your broadband goes mad with people using your server with your scripts and additional CSS files.

another problem is that if the template editing settings are tranfsered they will obviously overwrite the settings you already got in your template editing menu.
You new theme might not have an affiliates link at the bottom or a specific type of coding that you had with your other theme. And recoding elements is a hassle!

Summing up ... NO
the cons overwhelm the pros ... hitskin gives you only the style, how you arrange your forum with template editing is up to you.
A valiant suggestion drag, but somewhat impractical in many senses
and yes I've taken into account creating themes without coding and just to improve stylewise.
