The ability to "mute" users

Post by Corzzscape.motionforum.ne on October 24th 2009, 8:12 pm

I think that you should not only have the right to ban and ipban the member but i think you should also be able to "mute" and "Ipmute" them for different reasons because its not as harsh as a ban because they can still look around just not post Smile ( and maybe it would affect them in the chatbox too!) :wouhou:

You could set their account to "inactive" rather than ban then too Smile

This is very simple to do.
First you disable the ability to write private messages.
Then you make the user a personal user and you set his permissions so he can read but he can't write, edit or erase messages. If you have to mute more users, you just create a group called "mute" or however you like and remove the permissions to the whole group.
This option can be considered as already in place.

Very nice, Ina. That will actually do the trick and will run smoothly, but you forgot to say that they can set the group as "hidden." That way users aren't really aware of that group.. Very Happy

Depends if you want to scare them or not. We could keep the banned people secret but we don't lol!

I think this is a very good idea. Sometimes you want to just prevent them from posting but not completely ban them from the forum. Sometimes that may be enough and you don't have to ban them.

Essentially you create a group and set the permissions for that grou[p so that the user cannot post.

What people I think have missed is that what was being suggested was in fact suggested back in 2009 when I think permissions might have been different and the topic has been bumped by Ina to give input when in fact maybe at the time this method described by her wasn't possible.

Regardless of what Derri posted above (thank you for your input, nevertheless!), I voted Yes as it would be simpler to have an option which mutes them throughout all groups they're in, no matter what permissions the user might have, so that manual configuration wouldn't be necessary.
