If you vote yes you should make a post explaining why you vote in the manner you did.

Thanks

I vote yes, but do you mean the time it takes before you get disconnected, or what?

Especially for the chatbox where people get booted if they dont reply in enough time, the away feature doesnt work long enough

I voted Yes. My members have complained a lot about the connection timeout. I agree that there should be a set time out but more in the lines of 60 minutes or more at the discretion of the Site Admin.

Voted Yes. It has become a nuisance to have to constantly sign back in all because we left to see what new posts have been made. And does this also have anything to do with everyone getting booted at once while in the middle of a conversation? That's getting rather annoying as well.

Re: Increase connection timeout

Post by Boomerwang on September 25th 2008, 5:59 pm

I'd like to voice my support for increasing the timeout, just like all other 18 people (and not the 1 ridiculous person who voted no - haha just kidding) who voted at the time of this post (j/k j/k).

My reason is that my members have complained to me that they had tried to post long but very high-quality posts, only to lose them and have to re-type them completely because of the timeout issue. Another reason is that other free forum services offer control over session timeout for free - I've been able to select "Never" or specify a time interval, such as 1 hour.

Furthermore, I believe that the short timeout problem is intimately connected with the chatbox logout issue - it seems that the chatbox, relying on the forum login, will also kick you out of the chatbox when your session times out because it then considers you no longer connected. It makes using the chatbox inconvenient because you have to baby (i.e. closely monitor) your chatbox session and, as others have said already, basically nullifies the usefulness of the Away function, something I would really like to use because I would really love to just have a browser window open on my forum and keep it there all day.

Now I understand this might prompt some of you to just tell me to go somewhere else, so let me just be honest and say I really do appreciate all the features and the services we get for free here at forumotion. In setting up my forum I basically signed up for free forums with no less than a dozen other providers, and of them all I had the best setup experience with forumotion in terms of forum features available and other things.

In short I would really love to stick with forumotion (and likely will regardless of if this suggestion is heeded), but it'd be sad to see my forum lose member support because of a minor annoyance, like one weed in a beautiful garden.

That is why I ardently support allowing us admins to decide our own session timeouts. Thanks!

Re: Increase connection timeout

Post by J.B. on September 29th 2008, 10:41 am

I vote YES.

To answer some of the questions:

The forums are set up with a built in "TIME-OUT" feature, that logs people out if they are idle.

So imagine that you are at a great forum like mine (www.muzzlefree.com) and you have very challenging debate on something like the archaeological evidence showing dinosaurs coexisting with mankind. At my forum, we actually have scientists that regularly post and comment on such interesting topics.

Now imagine they want to make a technical post, and they have to type a lengthy response. Suddenly, they find they are missing information, so they minimize their FORUM window, to search some obscure date or time period. After they find it, they return, and continue to type out this long message.

Finally, they are finished, so they click on "SEND".

They discover the FORUM has kicked them off because they were idle too long, and all of that information in the post has been lost.
That person will probably never devote so much time to the forum again. I know I would not personally.

Re: Increase connection timeout

Post by ChadmStraight on October 10th 2008, 1:57 pm

I voted yes, and i completely agree with boomerwang in the opinion that forumotion gives the best free forum service.
i was using forumarena for awhile, and they where really limited on the customization of the appearance to your forum. I asked them if there was any way i could make my own theme, and the admins there doubted i'd find any free forum that would allow me to do that.
... give me a break.
So yes, forumotion has a lot of great features, but it needs this update just as much as any other.

if you dont know what a time out is, read these responses and you should get an idea.

Timeouts

Post by thisisit1 on September 22nd 2009, 10:41 pm

I also vote yes on increasing or making the timeout period adjustable. I feel the short timeout period frustrates numerous potential posters.

Definitely increase the timeout setting!

Post by maddox on May 5th 2010, 8:50 am

I am with all of you as this is becoming a problem as people are losing posts that they start and think they have posted. My forum is new and having folks become engaged in the forum is very important, when a new poster gets timed out and loses there post it is a real detterrent for them to return. Please help!
