Post by Waddle50008 on July 16th 2007, 4:00 pm

First topic message reminder :

I suggest their Be a button in options that you can choose that will disable the post count for users so that when a users posts something, their "Posts:" will not rise.

Why is this not in place yet? It seems like something that would be very easy to implement.

It would be good for this to be an option. My forum gets very competitive sometimes, and deleting post count would help. Or maybe in certain topics, like introductions, or games.

Re: No post count/Disabling post count on a particular forum

Post by Vito on September 12th 2010, 9:45 pm

Here's an update and summary for those who might be visiting this thread for the first time, although I encourage everyone to read the posts for your own information. In the interest of full disclosure, I voted "Yes". The rest of this post explains the issues this long thread already has covered in case you haven't decided how to vote yet.

Clearly, an overwhelming majority of users want the option. That doesn't necessarily make it right, of course. That's the obvious problem with the "tyranny of the majority"; the number of people who believe something has nothing to do with whether it's right.

An earlier post in this thread suggested that people who voted "No'" on this proposal might be folks who like to spam as an easy way to raise their post counts. Obviously, they would be opposed to this. I guess that might be true for some of the "No" voters, but after having read every post in this thread, it's clear that some of the "No" voters simply did not understand the proposal.

However, in this case, none of those considerations are relevant as far as the "No" votes are concerned. Because of the nature of the proposal, the only votes that count are the "Yes" votes. The fact that there are any "No" votes at all is an artifact of this forum's conditions on the way polls are structured. The rules for polls say explicitly:
- the multiple choice option must not be activated in the poll, just add two options : "yes" or "no"
I'm not arguing with the poll policy; I'm simply pointing out that a "No" vote doesn't really apply to this specific proposal, which is for an option to disable post counts for each individual forum, at the forum admininstrator's option. In the default condition, post counts are enabled. A "No" vote is irrelevant in any case, because anyone who doesn't want to disable post counts on any given forum can simply do nothing, and everything will stay the way it is now. Implementing this feature would simply make it available to the overwhelming majority of users who want it.

For the record, this feature already exists in the phpBB software on which forumotion's forum software is based. The feature is disabled by default in phpBB v3, where it already has been validated and released. Now it's just a matter of the forumotion team implementing it.

vote YES, I need that option as I got few topics i.e general chit chat and main discussions. I don't want any post to be count in chit chat section.

First off, WOO! VOTE 300!!!

Also, I am DESPERATE for a system like this. I don't want it for the whole forum, I just want it for my "General Board/Spam" so that way people can't spam for special reqards and whatnot, but earn it like the rest of the members by actually participating in the other areas. It's extremely easy to implement and if Proboards (Which is oldschool), can have it, why not forumotion?

Re: No post count/Disabling post count on a particular forum

Post by ChaCha on June 27th 2011, 8:03 pm

I am certainly voting yes for this. On the forum we currently administrate, we are in definite need to block posts from certain boards to stop said spammers from getting thousands of posts for simply writing 'Oh no' every time somebody replies to it.

Also, of course those spammers will disagree with this poll. Its obvious they won't be happy with this occurring but to be honest, that's like saying a child wont be happy because we put the cookie jar on an even higher shelf. They gotta be good kiddies and work nicely for it to get the cookie not spam their drooling posts all over the stood they found to get to the jar.

love my metaphor...

I agree there are some threads that should not count towards your post count, like forum games, etc.

It can mess up of some of Forumotion's features. Not only that, but I believe if you post something that it should be counted no matter what. Therefor, I am voting no.

I voted 'Yes' because our forum's members as well as the Co-Founders (I won't say I hardly believe that their brats sometimes because I know them too well.. -.-) LOVES spamming and violating the rules I worked hard on.

*stares at the people who voted no* You don't have to activate it if you don't want to. Just let us win, I'm begging youuuu! *cries*

its a statistic if you dont want users competeing over the user with most posts remove top posters and rights to view statistics, post count is a way of monitering activity and if you have spammers delete their spam and ban them

Re: No post count/Disabling post count on a particular forum

Post by Raingazer on August 15th 2011, 12:06 pm

@ Ninja frog : We do ban people and delete their spams, but I really want this option because I don't want any traffic on our forum, in addition to that, it'll help us save more time and we can interact with the members more (which is really part of our goal- create a community where everyone can fit in and the staff interacts). Sometimes we just end up spending our days focusing on deleting and banning which isn't good because we have lives to attend to other than fixing and making sure the board is neat.

I can take back my answer, but somehow, no one seems convincing about their reasons as to why they chose no.
