I voted for yes because I have a forum games section on my site and I would rather that the posts from there do not count as it isn't really anything important or note worthy. I've seen many other forums with this option and forumotion is one of the best - it just seems to be a shame that there isn't an option.

I vote yes. For certain game forums someone may post 5 times, and so they just don't post all the time there just to raise their post count, this would be nice.

@Zellogi wrote:...I've seen it on self-made forums (built from scratch), so I know it's possible, just can't wait for ForuMotion to build a feature like this. (:
Not only is it possible, it actually exists right now in the phpBB software on which Forumotion's software is based. That is, Forumotion doesn't actually have to "build" this feature. The Forumotion software is built on the phpBB code base, which is currently at version 3.0.11. The ability to disable post counts already exists, and has existed since phpBB version 3.0. So, there's nothing to "build"; the feature is already there. The reason we don't have it is because Forumotion hasn't implemented it in the administrator control panel.

The original post in this poll was posted in July, 2007. We're approaching six years since this feature has been requested. By way of summary, the poll and the posts in this thread demonstrate two things:

  1. The option to disable post counts is overwhelmingly supported by the vast majority of forumotion users for use in their own forums.
  2. Because the requested feature is an option that would be off by default, it would not affect any user who doesn't like the idea, and wants every post on his/her forum to be counted. Such users would simply not use the option. For them, nothing would change relative to the way post counts currently work.
As I've pointed out earlier in this thread, this really shouldn't have been a "Yes" or "No" poll in the first place, because it proposes an option that will be off by default, and that no one will be required to use (meaning, all posts will automatically count, just as they do now, unless you turn on the option to disable the post count for any specific forum). Alas, a Yes or No poll is the only kind of poll allowed by Forumotion rules. But the "No" votes are irrelevant. I have yet to see any post by a "No" voter that explains how the proposed feature harms them in any way. So far, all of the explanations demonstrate that they don't understand what "option, off by default" means.

Nevertheless, I'm still trying to understand why anyone could vote "No" on this proposal, and I'm open to any rational explanation. Maybe I'm missing something. If so, I invite any "No" voter to explain how an option that you don't have to use can possibly be a disadvantage to you.

Don't sweat friend. I voted Yes because it will be most useful to have. People who vote No have reasons which, unless they explain their logic, means nothing. When its right, its right. If its wrong, prove it. They have been unable to prove it wrong. Because of their unwillingness to prove it wrong, I am incline to think that they want to post [spam] at will without end. Thumb down

I like the idea of being able to disable people's post count. I wish I had this feature on my forum. There are some discussions I have left off my forum because I don't have the ability to disable post count.

Plus, if you have a member who's only purpose it to increase their post count then this feature would fix that.

I vote 'yes'.

I vote that it is just open to certain sections. Like if you wanted to make a "Spam Paradise" then when you are setting it up you have a bubble set that states "Allow posts to add to Post Count?" or something to that effect.

Excellent Idea for flooding or other types of useless sections which some people extensively use for blowing up posts scores in several RPG forums, or the like.

NB: That will be good if the french do likewise with their forums.

any updates on this ?

How many votes does it take for it to get implemented?

Question was raised many times, but it seems it is the French board staff who decides.

it's already 11 days 1 month and 4 years, and the suggestion still exist till now..

11 days is as breeze, sometimes, polls for longer are still resting as do old furniture in a dusty old attic room, or files in an archiving unit. But we do need to credit forumotion for one thing, inspiter of all this, the service is still attractive for us end-users, right?

This, to me, would be handy for forums that have off-topic spammy game type threads where users would post to beef up their post count.

This has been done in Nation states where their Forum 7 sub-forum does not count posts to ensure that the users post counts are not based on spam from silly games and "what's your favorite meal threads".

Certainly looking at the almost 90% that want it... I like the suggestion too.
We got a forum that attracts new players for a game looking for info and help. They often look at the post number as if someone would be more knowledgable with a high count. Not so much if its a pure forum games player lol

Re: No post count/Disabling post count on a particular forum

Post by Vito on October 9th 2016, 12:03 am

It has been more than nine years since this suggestion was posted. Approval has been unanimous by all Forumotion members who care about this issue and understand the original feature request.

Yes...I realize that the votes as of this writing are 414 "Yes" and 50 "No", but that simply proves that 11% of voters who say they oppose the suggestion do not understand the proposal in the first place.

Over the history of this thread, I have repeatedly asked anyone who voted "No" to explain how the option to disable post counts can possibly work to their disadvantage. So far, not a single "No" voter has responded with an explanation that makes any sense. I can think of no more convincing demonstration that the "No" votes are completely invalid.

The only people qualified to vote in this poll are forum owners/administrators, who already have the power to decide what options apply to their forums. What's more, the option to disable post counts already exists in the phpBB software on which Forumotion is based. It's not a feature that Forumotion has to create or build; it's already there. All the Forumotion team has to do is enable it.

When they do, anyone who doesn't want to use that option (presumably, that includes those who voted "No" in this poll) need take no action. Even when the feature is enabled, post counts automatically are shown by default. The only way post counts would not show on your forum is if you changed the default setting and actually turned on the feature "Disable post counts".

Well, if you want post counts to show, you wouldn't choose the option to disable post counts...that is, you wouldn't choose it unless you were the kind of person who doesn't understand what "option" means.

Would it be unreasonable to request that the Forumotion team explain why the option to disable post counts has not been added? If it would be unreasonable to request an explanation, then never mind.

But if it is reasonable, then I respectfully request such an explanation. Without it, it's difficult to understand why the feature is still not available, when the feature request has been unanimously approved by all users who understand the original proposal.

Thanks!

Even if a suggestion gets a lot of yes votes, it does not mean that it can be or will be implemented.

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I understand that the Forumotion team is under no obligation to implement any suggestion, regardless of how many votes it might get. However, because the requested feature already exists in the phpBB software in this case, and because its optional nature would not affect any user who chooses not to use it, it seems that it would be easy to implement.

But admittedly, I'm not privy to any inside information. For all I know, there might be a good reason why the Forumotion team doesn't want to include the option to disable post counts. If there is such a reason, I'm not challenging it. I'm only asking because I don't know what it is, and I'm trying to understand.

Thanks again!

Hooray! Now I can hide post counts!

Post by Vito on November 20th 2016, 9:17 pm

HOORAY! Finally...I can hide post counts! Here's a screen shot in my Users & Groups–>Users—>Profiles —> Profile fields Admin Panel showing what settings I used:

Notice that this does NOT disable post counts. Every user's posts are still counted. This just gives you the option to hide them. In my case, I don't want post counts to appear in the user panel for each post, but the post counts are still visible in each user's profile. But I could hide them there if I wanted to.

That's really all I wanted in voting for this feature. For me it wasn't really about disabling post counts; rather I just wanted the forum to have the ability to hide them. Making the post counts invisible in the user panel for each message removes the incentive for users who plaster the forum with substance-free, vapid, vacuous posts just to boost their post count, while adding nothing of significance to the discussion.

It's not a big problem on my forum, because the membership is pretty heavily filtered in the first place. We don't have a lot of people posting garbage just to increase their post count.

But I belong to other Forumotion forums where it's a huge problem, and the admins there would love to hide the post counts entirely. This will be very good news indeed for them, and for anyone who simply wants to discourage people who post meaningless posts to artificially inflate their post count.

I'm not sure when this feature was implemented, but my thanks goes out to the Forumotion team for enabling this important feature.

It's my understanding that the feature has only existed in the phpBB software since phpBB3 was released, which is a considerably shorter time than "always". It would have been helpful if you had mentioned it when you answered my post on this subject on 2016, October 8. In fact, in the entire 9+ years that this feature request has been active, not one Forumotion team member has mentioned it. What the fuck ?!?

Anyhow, it's obviously there now. You're certainly not obligated to say "You're welcome", but I'm still thankful that the feature is there now, regardless of when it was implemented.
