how to set widgets in home page?

i want to set some widgets in home page rathar then in portal.. how can i do this?

Hi All,
i have a phpbb3 forum. i want to make a home page for my site in which i am planning to do it in two ways.. (whichever possible!!!)... Please guide me which would be better and how it can be implemented..

1. I want a replica of index(home) page of phpbb3 forum as a home page in which only header and menu bar will be displayed. Alongwith it will display some widgets and some modules of the portal like last 15 posts, today's birthday etc.. In other words, we can say that i dont want to display the topics and categories on home page for e.g. forum page (same as i want for my site) and this is Home Page.

2. The second way is .. i will choose a template for my home page and and want to put the widgets in to it . Also i would like to add some parts of my phpbb3 forum for e.g. last 15 topic module, fav topics etc. on my homepage

I am sure that i will get the appropriate solution from forumtion for atleast one or may be for both.. :-)

I appreciate your reply however it is not the appropriate solution to the problem. My problem is regarding phpbb3 forum.
