Forum transparency? Empty Forum transparency?

Post by 4hams Sat 13 Feb 2010 - 18:20

Hi new here and to the software. My forum is http://mcstylists-overclock.forumotion.com/index.htm?sid=a7521999bfab67316c043c5eed04ac52

First off is it possible to import the contents (Categories, Threads & Posts) of another forum software into this forum software?

Hey folks is it possible to have the forum be transparent so the background image shows through the forum? If this is possible is it also possible to alter the amount of transparency?

I would like to have a fixed image for the background and the forum to move over the top of the background?

Any help with these questions is greatly appreciated!

for the first question no.
You can not transfer any data from another host to forumotion nor forumotion data to another host.

as far as transparency yes you can. it depends what you want to do. if you want to adjust the transparency then you would want to go for the translucent.. then you can change the density of it.

now if you just want the whole forum transparent then just take out the Background Color 1 2 & 3 then also remove body line forum line and row line colors. and hit save.. you will have to fiddle with it until you get exactly what you want.

if you are going for a more translucent effect to ware you can adjust it then check this out in tips and tricks.here

here are a couple forums i have done with it.
keep in mind these are adjusted how i like it and also went with black as the translucent.
but you can choose what color you like and adjust to your needs.

http://buffysinternetlounge.forummotion.com/forum.htm
http://floridafootball.forumotion.com/index.htm

then to have it completely transparent would look like this.
http://fmpreboard.forumotion.com/index.htm

keep in mind all these boards are test boards so some things might look a lil off
they are just to give you an example.

Info added

for your forum i think either way would look cool.
but i would set your background as fixed so it dose not repeat in the scrolling Smile

Thank you very much for your excellent reply very informative but a lot of work...

I don't understand why there is a pic management section in the admin section if it will not work. No matter what i do I still have to add the URL into the custom CSS for the images to appear. Talk about a waste of time for the Admin. Also why do we not have the ability to change the colors of the skins we choose?

I have found those settings in the premium section but then the forum should no longer be called Free forums???

there is no premium section for forumotion.
you can buy credits for more gallery space and your own domain but there is no paid version of forumotion.

And what do you mean your pic's management dose not work. of course it works.. you have to use a direct link image for your pic's management.you should really not use css for any images unless you are adding to the forums body,post body,subject box something like that.

and you can change all the colors of your skins.. it's in display colors.but if you have colors going in css too well then it can conflict with each other.Personally i would not use css unless it's absolutely necessary and the only way to get what ever it is your doing to work.if not then stick to the forums options as much as possible.. but there are certain things,options that can be only done through css. like the translucent effect.. that can only be done through css. Or just do everthing through css and for get the board options. for like phpbb3 alot of people only use css for that version.. so it's up to you./ there are many options and different ways to do things. you just have to find what works for you the best.

look at one of my forum for instance.. this was just a plain sub-silver skin.
i changed it to everything i wanted and am only using css for the translucent.

http://buffysinternetlounge.forummotion.com/login.forum?connexion

So yes forums can be a lot of work to customize it all depends what you want. but believe it or not forumotion makers it very easy compared to some paid forum where everything has to be installed,uploaded or some advanced knowledge of css.. believe me i have a paid phpbb board.. it's great and i can do a lot more and have different features.. but man they are way way different and can be harder then how forumotion has it.. forumotion makes it pretty easy.

so either Way you get what you put into it i guess.. there are many people that just find a skin they like add there own logo and that's all they need.
to others like me i like to customize and add all my own stuff.

I am sorry when it said premium in the settings I thought it was something you had to pay for in order for it to work. The setting did not work but with further reading it was probably due to the CSS used and I understand it takes president over the admin panel settings?

Your use of translucent and transparancies is very nice great job on those skins!

I guess I will have to play with the software a little more so I get a better understanding of the options. can I have one skin installed and functional while designing another over time? And how do i do this?

I am familiar with BB Code as i help administer a Proboards forum in which I have designed 3 of the skins. At the moment I am quite proud of the default skin I designed with transparancies. Go and have a look. I hope posting this link will not violate any rule here. http://georgeg4.proboards.com/index.cgi

Thanks so much for your help and Kirk you have convinced me to stick around and continue trying to tweak this software to my liking! I will be back to ask for help i am sure.

So how do I simply add transparency?

My members are bored of just seeing white and my background is only visible on like 10px edge.

Kirk thank you for the translucent info. I followed the instructions in the link you posted but there was no change in the forum appearence.

I added the code to the Site description as suggested in the tutorial and saved it and no change at all...

Here is the code I used: <style type="text/css">td.row1, td.row2, td.row3, td.row3Right { opacity: .8; filter: alpha(opacity=80); -moz-opacity: .8;}</style>

Any help would be appreciated as this is new to me.

I'd like to bump this thread too.

I have followed the instructions perfectly. The CSS allows me to alter the colour of the tables, but the opacity section does not work.

Is the script supposed to go in site description? Seems odd!

You may want to try this code?
it worked for me on my PHPBB3 forum skin.

Simply copy this code got to your CSS and paste it at the end of the CSS and then save it.

#wrap {filter:alpha(opacity=84);
-khtml-opacity:0.84;
opacity:0.84;
}

You can adjust the #'s for different effects.

Legend!

Yep that worked perfectly. I'd like to point out to anyone troubleshooting that I'm using Invision, so it's confirmed as working in that too.

Thanks Smile

Hi 4hams

That code you wrote works perfectly, but it doesn't work with all the parts.

It doesn't seem to work on widgets or forum posts. Any ideas?

I tried to figure it out myself, but I don't know how you find what different sections of the website are called in CSS. Is there somewhere you are looking at the information?

Thanks Smile

Hi ribena, I wish I could help you more but you probably know more about CSS than i do!

That code was provided to my by another member here in this forum many months ago. Possibly 12-14 months ago.

I no longer use that code as after about a year or so I and the members were tired of the effect it gave the forum. So we moved on to the subject matter of the forum, created a half decent banner and no just concentrate on the subject matter of the forum.

I truly wish I had the ability to help you more. But stick around as someone eventually will be able to help.

If board sometime drop by and see the forum and say hi!

Code:
#ipbwrapper {

That code makes my entire site transparent, which is not something I'm after. I guess I'll just try and figure it out...can't be too hard right? Very Happy
