Advanced Chatbox 2.0 Suggestion (Over 200 votes!)

The Forumotion Chatbox is vital for communication on SEVERAL forums, and from time to time I personally notice its missing a few features. I have made a list with a description of these features below. With your help, we can make this a reality for forumotion.

*Notice: This is COMPLETELY separate from the pop out chat 2.0, and has nothing to do with it. Though, the pop out chatbox does provide SOME of the features listed below, and I highly recommend it!*

Delete Function
Descrption: Moderators/Administrators may delete individual chatbox messages.

*NEW* Universal Feed Channel (Admins/Mods Only)
Descrption: The universal feed channel will show all messages being posted on the chatbox, including whispers, and private chat channels, for easy moderation.

Advanced Permissions
Description: Manage several permissions of the Advanced Chatbox such as some of the permissions listed below with a panel similar to the Forum Permissions Advanced Panel

Permission to view Chat - Limit the people who can view your chat by Usergroup, and/or username.
Whisper Function - Limit of the use of people who can use the Whipser function by Usergroup and/or username (The same ability you have with limiting Private Messaging in the forum)
Report Function Integration - Limit the use of the Report function by Usergroup and/or username.
Channels - Limit the use of SPECIFIC channels by usergroup and/or username.


Whisper Function - Can be disabled
Description: Send a message to specific user(s) on the chat that is only viewable to the users your specified

Ex.

User A: (Whisper to User B) Test Message

Private Chat Channel
Description: Creates a private channel that the creator can invite people into (Admins CAN monitor these channels!)


Notification - Optional
Description: Browsing another tab, but you fear you'll miss a message? Sound is unpopular, so I went for a different approach.

If a message is sent, your tab will flash (like a highlighted tab), Off by Default, can be activated via the ACP and Users can disable it specifically for them via the Profile/UCP.

Sound - Optional

Description: Chatbox will "chirp" when it has received a message



Report User Function - Optional
Description: People just don't break rules on the forum. They also break 'em on the chat as well, but if no mods are present, the abuse will continue.

With the Report User Function, you can right click a user on the Online list and click "Report User" which would send a report into the Reports panel, with a copy of the archives at the time for further investigation.

Channels/Instance - Off by default
Description: Need to discuss something with a group of users? Go into another Channel/Instance! Very useful to hold a Moderator meeting without disabling the whole entire chat to other users.

Of course, Channels can be managed by the Advanced Permissions function to specific usergroups/users

If anyone wants changes, I'll edit this.

Avatars - Optional, Enabled by Administrator
Description: Have a small version of the users' avatar on the chat

Anyone interested? This would be a very nice thing to implement.

There are multiple ways to improve the chatbox.

What exactly is a BlueImp AJAX Chat? How could I get one?

It's only for those with paid hosting from another service. I use forumotion as a back up.

Sound, maybe if it was optional. But it's hard to make something like a bot optional.

I vote yes - I was coming to add this suggestion myself!

I would love a noise when someone replies and you are on another tab - or even new message flashing on the tab would help there.

I would also like to option to add 'rooms' to the chat for groups.

A private chat function or whisper would also be great!

I'm not keen on sound - unless it is optional - but what my users really want is to be able to see the chat without having to log in to the chatbox itself.

Logging in to the site as a member should be enough logging in - the chatbox should be viewable to logged in members so they could monitor the chat and jump in if they want.

It is not like the chat is a secret conversation - it is open to all registered members - so it should be made to be ready seen.

So, except for my reservations about sound - I vote yes to any chatbox update.

I agree with this, but also, I tend to find, that most of them are confusing, thus leading to nearly no-one using them.

I wouldn't mind having a sound being integrated into the CB by default, but it is already possible via template editions.

Sound would have to be optional, as at times (especially with huge quantities of users) sound can get annoying, I can not deny that.

I have revised the thread, as sound would definitely have to be optional, along with a chatbot.

My responses are in this message:

Chatbot (Can be activated via Modules)
- Says when user logs in/out
It already does that
- Can respond to certain commands/text
Why is this needed?
- Admins/Mods can "takeover" chatbot with a takeover command like /takeover
I don't even see the point of the chatbot so idk.

Ability to Send PM's on the Chat
- Allow us to send PM's ON the chat, like a message on the chat that only the selected user(s) can see

Totally yes

Sound (Activated via Modules)
- Sound plays when a message is posted on the chat, and a different sound when a Chatbox PM is posted, etc. (Optional)

Na, don't really want this.

Channels (Managed via Modules)
- Allow different chat channels with permissions so different user groups can access them
Kinda like IRC? It'd be too confusing in the chat imo.

Disable Chat for Certain User Groups (Managed via Modules - with a similar system to the forums' permission system)
- Allow us to disable the chat for certain user groups/ranks
Well this is possible to some degree if you know html coding but sure.

Also: This is possible with the portal.

Many of you have made very, very valid points. And I have decided to revise this, and make it more useful for EVERYBODY. Not just the 1% of us.

I think that these features would be a lovely addition to forumotion. The features listed would improve forumotion 110%! The notification especially since I’m always doing other things, and miss conversations or questions directed to me.....because I’m not sure what’s going on in the chat.

This would be great for my clan in many reasons, mainly cause no one knows when someone chats. Everything pim listed would be a great and much needed addition

All these features for the chatbox would be really good!

I like the idea for whispers, having a noise for the chatbox because its hard to tell when there's a new message when I'm busy browsing other sites and then I miss out on an entire conversation, so that would really help.

I also like how some features are optional, thats really cool, and I'm sure not EVERYONE would like some of the features listed.

I really hope these features happen for real, the chatbox needs to be updated imo.

Notification and Report User Function are already possible with some coding.

Really need notifications - noise or even the tab blinking 'new message' people are missing each other all the time!!

Instead of the Tab flashing as a notification of the message, it should have a little Pop-Up that pops up at the bottom right of your screen.


Option 1:
Have it so a Pop-Up comes up on every message posted in Chat Box

Option 2:
Have a Pop-Up only come up if the message was aimed towards you ( Ex. @Username )

Nice idea, so like the pop up from PM, but this would have to be done with AJAX.

More support anyone? I'd love to see this in the next update!
