Advanced Chatbox 2.0 Suggestion (Over 200 votes!)

Post by Mio-chan on March 2nd 2010, 10:52 pm

First topic message reminder :

The Forumotion Chatbox is vital for communication on SEVERAL forums, and from time to time I personally notice its missing a few features. I have made a list with a description of these features below. With your help, we can make this a reality for forumotion.

*Notice: This is COMPLETELY separate from the pop out chat 2.0, and has nothing to do with it. Though, the pop out chatbox does provide SOME of the features listed below, and I highly recommend it!*

Delete Function
Descrption: Moderators/Administrators may delete individual chatbox messages.

*NEW* Universal Feed Channel (Admins/Mods Only)
Descrption: The universal feed channel will show all messages being posted on the chatbox, including whispers, and private chat channels, for easy moderation.

Advanced Permissions
Description: Manage several permissions of the Advanced Chatbox such as some of the permissions listed below with a panel similar to the Forum Permissions Advanced Panel

Permission to view Chat - Limit the people who can view your chat by Usergroup, and/or username.
Whisper Function - Limit of the use of people who can use the Whipser function by Usergroup and/or username (The same ability you have with limiting Private Messaging in the forum)
Report Function Integration - Limit the use of the Report function by Usergroup and/or username.
Channels - Limit the use of SPECIFIC channels by usergroup and/or username.

Whisper Function - Can be disabled

Description: Send a message to specific user(s) on the chat that is only viewable to the users your specified

Ex.

User A: (Whisper to User B) Test Message

Private Chat Channel
Description: Creates a private channel that the creator can invite people into (Admins CAN monitor these channels!)

Notification - Optional

Description: Browsing another tab, but you fear you'll miss a message? Sound is unpopular, so I went for a different approach.

If a message is sent, your tab will flash (like a highlighted tab), Off by Default, can be activated via the ACP and Users can disable it specifically for them via the Profile/UCP.

Sound - Optional

Description: Chatbox will "chirp" when it has received a message

Report User Function - Optional

Description: People just don't break rules on the forum. They also break 'em on the chat as well, but if no mods are present, the abuse will continue.

With the Report User Function, you can right click a user on the Online list and click "Report User" which would send a report into the Reports panel, with a copy of the archives at the time for further investigation.

Channels/Instance - Off by default
Description: Need to discuss something with a group of users? Go into another Channel/Instance! Very useful to hold a Moderator meeting without disabling the whole entire chat to other users.

Of course, Channels can be managed by the Advanced Permissions function to specific usergroups/users

If anyone wants changes, I'll edit this.

Avatars - Optional, Enabled by Administrator
Description: Have a small version of the users' avatar on the chat

I would love the chat box to have these features,
We were paying for a chat room, but the cost is just not something we want the burden of, so started to use the forum chat box...and we do miss most of the features you mention!

I would say yes, but as a purchasable feature. Not free.
And all the extra features can be toggled on/off by an admin.

It shouldn't be flash though. Flash is just really unstable, especially on Linux operating systems. HTML5 is way better.

And even better than flashchat, because it would be completely integrated into the forum, and connected directly to the website profiles!

Post by Ninja frog on July 27th 2011, 1:32 pm

sounds yes maybe a toggle like the auto refresh feature also flashing tab bar excellent idea

flash is not suitable for my forum as many of my members use mobile internet to access the forum

multiple pages or channels are hard to moderate unless their is a complete page with all the messages for mods to view

mods should be able to view whispers as otherwise this could lead to an abuse of the system dont say that the user who apperes to be the victim can copy and paste the whispers as this could be faked

avatars is a bad idea as it will slow the chat and the chatbox of my forum occasionally gets enough members to have two scroll bars so avatars would only add to

user report system is a great idea

also could i point out that an update from a member of staff on the current situation would be much appriciated

Voted yes, but I also think the timeout needs to be extended because some of my forum users would go AFK now and again, eliminating the need to constantly re-login into the chabox.

Ha, most definitely. Not a single staff post yet, and we're almost on the 5th page.

And yes, mods should also be able to view whispers/private channels. I'll add that to the OP. Haven't edited it in AGES.

Toggling the advanced chat is a bad idea, unless you mean admins doing that in the ACP (great idea).
Thank you, I liked my tab idea. Very Happy
I agree about flash, as approximately 90% of visitors are mobile and most use both mobile and non-mobile devices to access the forum.
As in a complete page where you view all the channels seperately, and can open up each individual channel (think spoilers) and review the chats for each channel? I think that's a great idea, very clean, simple, and eliminates need for admins or chatbox mods to log in to the chatbox just to read the archives and past messages!
I'm iffy about the reading of whispers. The whole point is that whispers are private yet instant, so I'm not sure that's a great idea. And how would that be managed? I suppose in a certain user's profile, there will be a spot to let admins monitor all whisper conversations? I think this should have an option to be toggled off in the admin panel, or just plain not done at all. Obviously copy-and-paste can be faked, but this applies for everything and not just whisper chats. My forum is active, and the archives fill up two to three times each hour. The users (and smart admins) should already know that even screenshots/ screencaptures/ screengrabs/ screenclippings can be faked too, though members just doing this to report something is a better alternative.
I agree with your opinion on avatars. My chatbox is often flooding with members on popular hours and still double scrollbar normally. I suppose this could be toggled in the ACP as well.
@AMRES wrote:Voted yes, but I also think the timeout needs to be extended because some of my forum users would go AFK now and again, eliminating the need to constantly re-login into the chabox.
Bad idea, as this leads to EXTREME clutter. It's complicated enough with AFK members on mine as it is. If they're away, they can log back in. Simple.

i wasn't suggesting the whole advanced chat being on toggle just the sound alert system(basically a mute button)
maybe for the whispers the members have an option to let a mod see their whispers to a member and the reply's so mods couldn't abuse this feature

Screenshots can also be firebugged.

And by the way, can we have the option to disable image codes from working in the chatbox? Cause it can be extremely disruptive when a member posts a large image in the chat and sometimes chat moderators are not there to clear the chat.

You can resize/disable images via CSS Smile

Though an admin panel option would be more convenient.

About whispers, and other private channels, moderators/admins may view a complete log via a real time channel that shows a universal feed from all channels.

So, you better trust your admins Smile

If anyone has a better way of doing this, please share. Then I'll edit the OP.

Sorry, I misunderstood. Very Happy That's a great idea then.
I still have hesitations about that idea... That is still basically invasion of privacy, seeing as the other member wouldn't have condoned it... And if both must for the whisper to be shared, the information would not be that pressing to be shown to a mod anyways.

Really? Very Happy And videos and the sort? Pray tell, what code is needed? I agree, images and videos in the chatbox alone are very disruptive.
I feel like a universal feed would be too cluttered and complex, not to mention confusing with unrelated messages being one after the other (since from different channels). It would also fill up quickly on active forums.
Whispers should definitely not be included in this feed as well, because that would be ridiculous. So, again, that part at least would need to be in a different spot as mentioned before. Sorry, but I had to mention the obvious just in case anyone tried to contradict it.

Well, there is a CSS code to hide images, not sure much videos. Well, I think mods should still be able to see whispers - this function can be abused amongst members, I know, I've seen it happen. And I used that function to view the whispers to stop it. The [two members] were plotting against the forum and spamming it.

A report function is useless in that case. Thus being able to view it would be the best option.
