Forum Activity

Post by LostLegend on June 28th 2010, 6:58 pm

First topic message reminder :

Not sure how to discuss this without making it look as if you are advertising :/
I see no rules on this other than no advertising.
This is a forum activity discussion, not an advert discussion.

Ok, NO forum links please! Put them in profiles!

Main discussion: Has anyone noticed forum activity going down recently? Mine has gone through several dips and rises but now I'm getting an average of under 10 members logging on of over 60 possible in 48 hours. As if matters didn't need to be made worse, I'm getting some emails saying 'the forum is boring'...

How can this be possible? I have a lot for members to do on it.

I don't seem to be the only one affected thankfully. There are some large forums in which activity has decreased almost to my average (even if mine is slightly lower)

I guess the worst pain is when no-one is really interested in newsletters or what the updates are.
Have you (or are you currently) experiencing decreased activity (remember, please, no links! Don't post them here!) and increasinly expectant members who are bored easily?

I am New in Forum, and my opinion Forum Activities can contribute significantly to successful communication and community building in an online environment. You can use forums for many innovative purposes in educational settings, but teaching forums and student forums are arguably the two more significant distinctions. Smile

That is what I didn't want here. Delete from quote, report, move on.

Anyway, after spending months and tireless weeks at my computer (and admittedly getting anxiety for 3 days in the progress until I started doing daily squash!) I have clocked the 80 member mark fo'sho!

Anyway some tips to get guests looking around a little more: Make your forum look good (I often find black backgrounds work best for most forums)
Have a *few* convos with yourself if you need to. Don't continue once a few people join. Get them into the convo and give clones a reason to leave. Make them look real, actually make a farewell topic and all that!

Only make categories you need until people come along and start asking for stuff.*
Don't make the forum hard to navigate - have shortcut links everywhere!
Don't make the forum too long to scroll down.
*Make a suggestions/news/rules category for people to suggest their own things.

Make a rule where people can't ask to be mods, it gets very annoying.

Make sure all icons on forum are relevant to the topic and not too large.
E.G: don't have a Naruto picture in a Twilight forum. Don't make that picture obscure half the page :/
Have a cool and unique banner. Find a graphic designer.

Many forum-goers like widgets and some do not. Put widgets in the portal if you need to (I personally like using the recent topics and such widgets)

Putting the default chatbo at the top of the forum makes the forum seem shorter to guests while being visible for the members!
(Many people say they can't see it at the bottom...)

Advertise wherever you are allowed. Join a lot of forums, put your link in your signature and profule pages where you can. Make a lot of posts so it appears in many places.
Don't post spam - that will drive away visitors (like that one we had a few hours ago)

Hope you enjoyed reading...!

Why are you posting links when it specifically says not to in the first post?
Aiko's site is an RPG.

Warriorcat: You mean it plummeted (as for sarcasm) or it increased by 3?

Re: Forum Activity

Post by LostLegend on July 10th 2010, 10:39 pm

I just got some chatbox messages saying I drove away 3 members because of my behavior (I was freaking out about inactivity a few days ago because I had blood sugar problems and I didn't exercise enough - Hypogucemia or something)
One person is unknown
One I apparently offended when he didn't pass the Chuunin Exam
One got annoyed with my inactivity yelling lol

TBH that Hypo thing is over...

I have to resort to giving (4) of my best members the best spot in the RPG which they can claim if they make new accounts and send me great RP samples.

*Shrugs*
Activity is ok but may drop :/

Yeah. I am worried about mine too. This is why.

A user(#3) Had just joined my forum. But, since i am a Christian, it disturbed me. So i told him to change it. Next, he had one with a swear word in it. SO i told him to change again. He did, but no one has posted since then.

Hmm.
So a user made an offensive username twice? Shouldn't that be a ground for a banning anyway?

And could there be other reasons why no-one has posted? Looking at your forum (Lol it's in your profile link) it looks like your forum lacks a banner and could do with some events to get it rolling. Set up some username rules and such while you are at it?

Take a closer look at the topics. And also, i think i will give the user a warning. ALthough there is no rule about the first one(yet) The TOS do say no swear words.

Double post alert.

Events - looks like a cat forum so how about pictures of your cat and the best one wins some sort of badge (There's a tutorial on how to add them somewhere, just search)
-Strangest foods your cat eats (One of mine eats Chow Mein 0.o)
-Videos of cats doing tricks
-Best pet foods

Things like that.

No, you can report yourself Wink (Or just edit the double post >.>")

People don't always read the TOS, by the way.

And sorry, I'm already on quite a lot of forums at the moment (Mine and this one and some other gaming forum) so I don't have bags of time. Once I get that staff member and those Kages, I can relax a bit more.

Vote on cat foods? Whiskers over here xD

I have a strange guest too! (Ip starts with 95.xxx... is that yours too?)
This guest keeps popping up and staying for hours on the forum. He comes on almost every day. He's not a bot, I checked.

Putting chat on your forum would make it seem more lively.
