(HELP!) How to make a password protected forum?

Hey guys, still a newbie here but..

I'm in the process of making a forum at the moment, I just used one of the themes from Hitskins... and I'd like to make it password protected. So only members who know the password can get in and see it. something like an authentication page that says "Please enter password: _____________________" or something like that. and after having entered it, it redirects you to the homepage..

Anybody know how to do this? please reply.

If you have a custom homepage, you could do some javascript for a password. This is an untested script, try it out:

thanks very much for the script! .... um unfortunately I'm not quite if my homepage is a custom homepage or not. I don't think it is, since there isn't any HTML or CSS section.. or I can't find it.

We can't do it. That script can work with some additional advanced settings, if we have our own host etc. With forumotion its not possible.

I agree with boffer. This would take more work on the part of your forum administrators, but you could have every thing on the forum only viewable to like Moderators and up, and then have all the members that you want part of the forum promoted to Moderator. Then you would need to give the Moderator group no priviledges so that not everyone has Mod rights. This was probably very confusing.. I didn't word it well.

Having a password system is just one method of restricting access to a forum.
Putting a member in a group, with exclusive rights to selected forums, accomplishes the same thing.

I MAY HAVE A SOLUTION.

I just made this forum as an example.
THE PASSWORD IS 1 2 3 4.

It is basically an HTML page with four number options for the password. If you choose the correct one, it brings you to the next number choice. Once you type in the fourth one correctly, it brings you to the site. Obviously with only four choices, people would figure the password out quickly. However, you could have like 100 number choices, and make the password like 20 characters long.
With this idea, there are two main security problems:
Members leaking the password.
Members leaking a direct link to the forum.

You would probably want to change the password often, and then send the new password to only the people you want to be members.

However, if you're only going to have a small group of people on the site, these problems shouldn't, well.. be a problem. Hopefully this option can be usable for smaller sites until forumotion can use the password thing you all were discussing earlier in the topic.
THE PASSWORD IS 1 2 3 4.

Yes it does, but the user specifically has mentioned about using a password. Thats why i have responded to the same question.

But we have passwords to log in...Can't we just use the log-in code for forums too?
