How do I change the color of members automatically?

I have noticed that members are the same exact color as the color of the links on the site. I want to change the color *Automatically* of members that just joined the site. Can anybody help me with this?

**Note- I am aware of the grouping system.. However the grouping system does not work for brand new members unless I manually insert every new member that registers into a group. And that is not what I am asking for help with.

I set my site up with a temporary theme for phpBB2. Can I modify the templates of a temporary theme so I can see if this works?
