Unread topics problem!! Empty Unread topics problem!!

Post by matt_m August 17th 2010, 9:09 am

Hi,

Several members on my forum have been reporting problems with the unread topics lists over the past few days (never had a problem before). They will be actively on the forum and reading through the unread topics/posts since last visist, when suddenly they will go back to the list to find ALL the unread topics are wiped clear (marked as read) so they have no idea what they have seen and what they haven't!!!

Shocked

Please help. They have changed nothing else on their settings/their computer and I haven't changed anything in admin panel, yet this problem has only started happening in recent times. It is making using the forum very difficult for them and they may have to stop using it.

Hello

Maybe... if your members are logging in the forum and looking at there are new posts since their last visit, they will just read some of them and then they will log out. The remaining posts which are unread cannot retrieve back along with some new ones. The remaining posts will be wiped clearly and marked as read.

Here in forumotion... It is NOT possible for the forum to remember all the posts that haven't been read once they log out.

No, this isn't what is happening. I have asked them and they have not logged out at all, they keep logged in at all times, and this can happen when they haven't even left the forum!! They could be reading unread topics, go back to unread topics list and bam....nothing there.

Well.... Having your posts marked read when they have not been read is expected, for forumotion.

Unread topics problem!! Empty Re: Unread topics problem!!

Confused I'm confused. Allow me to try and explain again.

This issue has only been reported to me over the past 2-3 days. Before then, it never happened.

Posts and topics are being marked read that were previously unread, even though the member has NOT logged out or even left the forum. They haven't even been inactive on the forum...they have been actively browsing through but then go back to unread topics/main forum index and randomly, they're all marked read! This doesn't happen every time, it seems to happen randomly but has happened at least twice every day over the past 2-3 days.

This makes using the forum unbearable! My forum is very active and gets a lot of posts - how are they supposed to tell what they have read and what they haven't? It's an impossible task when the unread topics are no longer highlighted. So they obviously get fed up and don't bother.

Please tell me this isn't normal or that I am going to have to put up with this from now on, as it makes my forum dysfunctional! And as I said....I have NOT had this problem in the past.

Help!

Well... I found with my forum that if I was always logged in and left the site or create a topic or reply which is so long that it consumes plenty of time, when I came back the new posts would be gone.

And sometimes... ,If I refresh the page or I accidentally close it and get in my site from the beginning, after I did that..., I cant see the new posts anymore

Yes but this is a new problem on my forum.

Also it isn't always a case of having written a long reply or just left the forum open for a long time, as I have spoken to the members in depth about it.

In admin settings I have the 'time before members are considered inactive' set to the MAX 60 mins.

well I think it happens with all of us, if you close the browser or left the site for a couple of minutes. It considers you have read all the messages.

And I dont have any idea for us to fix this...

If a member visits a single thread in a forum, that is considered to have read all the threads in that specific forum.

Why? This shouldn't be the case...

Also, it doesn't do that to me. If I read a single thread in a forum, I can go back and the rest of the threads will still be marked unread. It didn't used to happen to them either.

So are you saying this is a new technical fault?

I am unable to understand your fault now. I meant once he goes into a thread then comes out refreshes, then its meant its read.

The issue is that ALL the threads are marked as read - even ones that have not been read.

But, after what does it happen? Just going onto the forum & then refreshing or what?

The way they described it is that they were viewing the 'unread topics since last visit' and read a single topic, then went back to the unread topics list and there was nothing there...when before there was a long list.

I think I may have found out what it is though. I am using a domain name but the old forumotion address still works - I was wondering if maybe using the old address might be why they were getting issues?? I have told them to update their bookmarks etc again with the new .com URL.
