Ability to install new mods

Post by nar112293 on October 8th 2007, 6:42 pm

At this website, I found some awesome new "mods" for Phpbb forums...
http://www.phpbb.com/mods/db/

I found out that they do not work on forumotion forums.

I am suggesting that forumotion allows the capability to install these new mods.

This can/will enable a greater expansion of customization and enjoyment of the forums.

This is a BAD idea... phpbb MODS will NOT WORK with forumotion! What if someone tries to install a mod that stuffs the whole site up? Plus, for these to be installed, you would have to edit the coding, thus if we had access to the coding someone could steal it, make their own forum company and use forumotions software.

No from me.

There are lots of badly written MODs around. Also, it would be a piece of cake to take over Forumotion, as you can write your own MODs, which change the underlying code. This brings a serious security issue, so a definite "no" from me.

yeah, allowing access to the site's code is like an open door for even the most amateur hackers.

although, i think there should be a feature where a board can pay forumotion to install exclusive mods

Or we could have a request form. We give the link to the mod we want installed, and forumotion can install it on our board for us...
wouldn't this prevent hackers??

Well, to be able to ban the IP's of all potential hackers, you'll have to know what the intentions of each Forumotion user are, so you'll have to look inside their heads. I think you agree with me that that's impossible.
Even if it would be possible, there's no way to completely ban someone from a website.

Re: Ability to install new mods

There are numerous other free forum hosts out there, and all of them are competing with each other, and each have different administrative capabilities and mods. In my opinion, I'd be more worried about a hacker simply busting into my site and taking it over, as I don't see the sense in someone just hacking into one particular forum host just to start up their own.

I vote yes, to additional mods, either via personal upload, or by getting more technicians other than just Soon.. who is probably worked to the bones by now.

However, and I say this with great respect for the people of Forumotion, it seems that most of our wants and ideas that we post are doing nothing more than giving us something to do, because there hasn't been a thrilling upgrade or addition in awhile, and we still have no idea what, if anything, they are working on now.

But additionals mods that have been requested by other people, and have numerous votes would be great to have.. so again, I simply vote yes to having more mods.

I think peeps should suggest mods and forumotion could them check them out and install the popular ones.

I'm really hoping for ibProBattle as I have many members from other boards who would come to my board if I had this feature. Plus .. I love it Razz

How will you put the file changes in if you don't have FTP access?

Bump. The potential for customising our forums with mods is quite high and I'd like to see this. Wink

I suggest if you want to be able to install mods, abandon the use of free forum hosts. installing any mod you want will require you to edit files and upload new ones and I don't think it's possible with forum motion.
