Solved Major Forum Hack

Post by Gasol_The_Great on September 30th 2010, 9:11 pm

First topic message reminder :

Today, a forum of which I was staff on was hacked. It started yesterday when my account (a packager's account) was hacked and used to delete all of the content in a forum.

And today, a moderator and possibly an Administrator's accounts were hacked leading to the deletion of ALL content.

This was BY FAR a small forum. Over 500 members considered it home, and they had posted a combined total of over 50,000 posts all of which are now gone.

Im sorry Forumotion, but your security is unacceptable. Anyone can hack forumotion forums at any time. It is honestly terrible. You need to pick up the slack. Seriously.

By the time I was online again, my account had been banned (the incident took place at night in my timezone). But after it was unbanned this morning, I was able to access it with my old password, which I promptly changed to a harder one.

Yes, there is literally NO WAY they could have guessed it (unless they actually knew me personally). The password was related to something I have never talked about anywhere on the internet.

Btw, another thing I remember is though, when Micro1000's (moderator) account was hacked, he and the hacker were both using the same account at the same time.

Okay, so Joel why did you ban Gasol?

You saw it in the admin panel that he deleted those 3000 posts or something?

No, it was Cafetin (the Admin who was hacked today) who banned my account. I didnt get all the details, but apparently he saw in the mod report that it was my account deleting all the posts. His first reaction was to ban the account entirely.

Someone hacked into Gasol's account, and went to delete all the posts i the package section, and went to ban some members too.

So, Cafetin banned Gasol to avoid any more post loss. And what Cafetin did (banning your account) was a smart move. Or we would have been dead by now.

My account was hacked first. Then the two other accounts were hacked about 12 hours ago.

In total, there were 3 accounts effected over a period of apx. 36 hours. All three accounts were staff.

Hard is a relative term.

To me a program that enters a different password in every chance it gets may take 6 months, but I put in little effort. So that is not hard.

So you basically just admitted to being a hacker...

Are you the one who hacked Advertise Hotspot?

LOL! In no way did my statement refer to myself as a hacker. I fail to see a permanent financial gain to hacking.

In answer to your question. No I did not hack your website, now be careful of whom you accuse. Other may not take an accusation like that as lightly as myself.

Typlo will come along today or Monday I believe...

Once your account is back, just restore the forum a week ago (or so? Depends when it actually happened.)

And I don't think the Phpbb site will transfer a forumotion database... because you don't have the forumotion version to begin with Wink

WTF? The site has been re-opened some how! And the hacker is using micro1000's account to delete posts again!

How did they re-open it?!

Cant someone from Forumotion trace that IP address? The only thing I noticed was in the "whos online" the hacker is in the UK. I know this because the real micro1000 is in Serbia, but every time the hacker is online it shows his location as the UK.
