Botters attacking forums

Post by Adam360 on October 5th 2010, 11:59 am

A lot of forums are being attacked by bots, or advertisers, i've had only 2 on the forum which i am admin on (not founder), but my friend has had 3 today...

I have banned the IP from the first one, but the second 1 has no IP when i try to ban it...

I'm going to ask the founder to change it to "activate your own account" and see if that works, but this is just a word of warning to some people...

Evidence: I googled the names, and they are on over 20 forums each, and some, they are advertising stuff via visitor messages...

Sorry, i'm not good at explaining stuff, but if anybody else is having the problem, just explain in your post.

I've had three join my forum, leaving adverts and links on the accounts visitor messages.

Waiting to see if anymore join. So annoying lol.

ETA: the names of the bots that have joined mine are

they cant be bots.. bots can not register on the forum they only gather information of boards forums they have access too.. so if it is a registered bot it means someone has registered and is calling it a bot.

be sure to check all forums permissions and do not allow guest if you do not want bots to have access to them sections.. then i would have the administrators activate all new members accounts. if you see a user name that says bot then do to activate them.

but once again bots can not register only real people can.So it is someone registering it as being a bot.

Quoting Darren's "Bots - Who and what they are"

Darren's wery useful thread, which doesn't mean the same as kirk wrote:So what's the other, remaining 1% of these bot's?

Well, this 1% is an astonishingly large amount of bot's.
These very rare & very few bots can do what the other bot's cannot do.
They can:

•Register on your site

•Create NEW topic's on your site

•Reply to current topic's on your site

•Spam your forum

According to Darren, which i'm a big fan of, Bots can spam, and register. But only 1% of them.. Wink

They left a message on their own visitor message, advertising football jerseys.

Just keep banning them, there is no way to avoid them.

Well, I think there might be a way, actually, to keep bots from registering on your forums by image verification. For more details:

Hi,

Tracian, actually, some bots are being programmed so intelligently, that they can read capatcha's now days Wink

The only thing you can do is to keep banning them.

Saxaca, Thanks you Smile
I might be submitting an update of that guide shortly as the stats have changed, dramatically.

Could you please send me by PM the websites they advertise? It would be useful for us, as we ban all these sites and block the posters.

I've had to set it to admin approved,

But it then takes time for somebody to be able to become a member, and they may not come back, i hope this gets resolved soon so that i can set it back to automatic account activation

Our solution is to ban the sites they advertize, we build a up-to-date list daily.
