A web hosting option would be a useful option to accompany a Forummotion account.

Website hosting to go with forum Empty Website hosting to go with forum

Post by TasV October 13th 2010, 13:22

Hi,

My forum is taking off at present. More and more people are finding it, its rep. is spreading quickly within its field, and I'm starting to think about value adding it with support features on a regular website. One such features is to install a remotely hosted auction script to go with it because I have had industry interest in the forum and one way I thought I could keep this interest going is to provide a place where they can sell their products (great for promoting new comers to the field to). I have been wondering how feasible it would be to have a webhosting option added to combine the forum with a website? Of course I can go elsewhere to do this, but I have been very happy with Forummotion and would like the option of keeping it all together. I have a LOT of credits stored up from member donations that have allowed me to purchase a dedicated url and I still have a lot of credits left over. Might it be possible to 'cash in' these credits for webspace/hosting? Appologies if this concept has already been raised and discussed.

I'm confused by your suggestion, you can already make your forum a full-fledged website with the HTML pages. The only thing you don't have at your disposal is access to the database, but most things can be achieved by trickery with JavaScript.

Well, forumotion is not a full fledged hosting site. Take example of bravenet.com

Wherein you can host your files, etc.

Well, there are already numerous free file hosting sites out there out there, and you can even host JavaScript files on Forumotion's HTML pages, so I don't see the need for this.

There is a difference.

To host html pages from websites, We need to link hundreds of things together. If we had a cpanel to upload it. With just one go, avoiding uploading each & every image we could have got the result.

Anyways even i said NO, because forumotion needs to stay as a forum host.

Clearly, you guys can do as you want and there may be merit to keeping FM as a forum host only. My suggestion came about meerly as a way to keep everything together so that other services can be be provided with my forum, which as I said, is growing quickly. I know I can construct custom html pages, however, these are still influenced by the forums css etc and even if you set them with custom settings they are over-ruled and the forum's default settings come into play instead and I haven't worked out how to get around it yet (and the purpose of this post is not to get suggestions as to how I could do this). I would like the flexibility of adding my own css to my website and know I can go elsewhere to get web space, I just figured it might be something FM could do so could continue to support FM as the service has been good. My forum members have also made significant financial donations to my forum and the credits sitting there unused could be cashed in for webspace. A Cpanel would be good, though I prefer to use ftp. I don't want to go all over the net to host files... I like to keep it all together. No biggy if you guys don't want it... just a suggestion. At time of writing the majority of voters seem to agree that it might be a good option too Wink
