Re: Question about multi themed forums

Post by Diana on October 25th 2010, 6:16 pm

Okay, I did everything by this tutorial and it won't work.
Before at this point Gangstar did something to the forum to make it work but I want to know what to do and how to do it myself.

1) I made an HTML page and put this code in there http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex9/styleswitch.js and saved.

2) Then found the /head bit in the template and put this code right before it
Code:
    <script src="HTML PAGE URL HERE" type="text/javascript"></script>
Put the HTML page link there.

3) Then I inserted this code
Code:
<link rel="alternate stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen" title="default" href="DEFAULT STYLE SHEET URL HERE" />

<link rel="alternate stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen" title="theme1" href="STYLE SHEET 1 URL HERE" />

<link rel="alternate stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen" title="theme2" href="STYLE SHEET 2URL HERE" />
right before the javascirpt code in the template. I put the style sheet urls in place.

4) Then I put the
Code:
<form id="switchform">

<!-- Choose theme 1 -->
<input type="radio" name="choice" value="default" onClick="chooseStyle(this.value, 60)">Default Theme<br />

<!-- Choose theme 2 -->
<input type="radio" name="choice" value="theme1" onClick="chooseStyle(this.value, 60)">Theme 1 Name<br />

<!-- Choose theme 3 -->
<input type="radio" name="choice" value="theme2" onClick="chooseStyle(this.value, 60)">Theme 2 Name
</form>
right after the body tag

And the thing is not working.

Did you placed these:
Code:
<link rel="alternate stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen" title="default" href="DEFAULT STYLE SHEET URL HERE" />

<link rel="alternate stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen" title="theme1" href="STYLE SHEET 1 URL HERE" />

<link rel="alternate stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen" title="theme2" href="STYLE SHEET 2URL HERE" />

above the </head> tag (:

Yes, it's before the /head tag.
This is the order I have
Code:
<link rel="alternate stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen" title="default" href="DEFAULT STYLE SHEET URL HERE" />

<link rel="alternate stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen" title="theme1" href="STYLE SHEET 1 URL HERE" />

<link rel="alternate stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen" title="theme2" href="STYLE SHEET 2URL HERE" />

Then
Code:
<script src="HTML PAGE URL HERE" type="text/javascript"></script>

Then comes the /head tag.

If you have put the codes correctly, it must work. You have done something wrong. Please provide a link to your forum so that I can check it myself.

I am not going to change anything, I just want to see if the codes are added correctly. I don't need any log in info, just the URL of the forum where you have added these codes Smile

UPDATE :

When I checked on your forum, I found that you have added wrong codes in the HTML page you made. Check it again in admin panel > modules > html page management

The codes you entered there do not match the codes provided here : http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex9/styleswitch.js

Just copy all the codes from above file and paste them as is in your HTML page. It should work then. Make sure that you do not use the visual editor, you should add the codes in HTML mode.

No mate. The 'HTML' should be in green color. Click it and it will turn green, then try copy-pasting the codes and save Smile You are almost done.

Re: Question about multi themed forums

Post by Diana on October 25th 2010, 7:23 pm

Okay, thanks, I got it now.

Although this brings me to the problem I had on the second page.

Gangstar said, or at least that s how I understood him, that I can create a forum, then change its looks.
Get the css code of it and post it in the code I have on my test forum.
That means I can have different looks I have created on my test forum.

But when I put the css code in my test forum it doesn t change to the look IO created, it just goes to the default look of my test forum.

You mean, you put the CSS codes in your style sheet in admin panel to change the forum look?

If so, then it won't work. You have to create a separate CSS file with the changes and upload it to some web host.

I understood that I just have to copy the -ltr.css number and put it in my forum s code.

What exactly do I have to do then?

Does it go to default when you refresh the page?

Ahhh...yeah. I forgot about that. I had this problem before. I have cookies enabled, it doesn t make a difference though. Gangstar did something for it to stay in chosen theme.

When I check your forum on my browser, the theme stays to the chosen one and doesn't go back to default on refresh. There can be something wrong in your browser settings.

No, cause after Gangstar did something it stayed in the chosen theme.

Ah, never mind. It seems to work.

So would you mind talking me through the css thing. Like, how to get my own designed looks on the forum?

Re: Question about multi themed forums

You can create your own theme Wink

Go to Admin CP > Display > Colors > CSS > Click "See your forum basic CSS".
This is the default CSS. You can change/add/remove the codes in it and save it as a .css file on your PC. Then upload it to a web host and link the file in your head template using <link... /> tag.

EDIT:

Also, you have to add an option for new theme in the form element that you added inside the <body>.

Okay, what exactly do I have to change in the code?
And just in case - what is the best website for hosting .css files?
And where exactly do I put the link tag in the template?

I m sorry I really don t know, but I want the thing on my forum. I m running a website for teenage girls and their moods and tastes change too often.

Thats what you should know. If you know CSS, you should be able to edit the code, otherwise not. You can ask someone to create a theme for you.

rhe wrote:And just in case - what is the best website for hosting .css files?

You can upload it to any free web hosting site. Example : http://bravenet.com

rhe wrote:And where exactly do I put the link tag in the template?

Above or below the other link tags that you added in your templates (before the </head> bit).

Okay, but what if I get the css off of one of the new desing forums and upload that somewhere? Will that CSS be the css of the new look or the default of it?

It will be a new CSS then.

There is an easier way to get themes, if you don't want to create and host css files.

Create themes on a test forum and once you are done, upload that theme to hitskin. Now you can get the -ltr.css code of that theme from hitskin.com.

Okay, I've got a question now.

How can I make it a dropdown menu?
And is it possible to move it to the bottom of the page?

Okay, here's another question. Why don't the new theme buttons appear? It's like no buttons appear at all or the default buttons appear.

And with some themes the subforums are all over the widgets, how to sort that out?

Re: Question about multi themed forums

If you want to convert it into a drop-down list, you can find some info about it on the tutorial page on dynamicdrive.com

To move the controls to the bottom of the page, you can add them to overall_footer template.

If new buttons are not appearing, you need to check if you updated the script on both the places. Firstly, you add <link... /> tag in head tags that defines a new theme and secondly you have to add <input type="radio" name="choice" ... /> tag inside the body tag where you added the theme changer control form.

Hope it makes sense Smile

I'm not sure about that. As I said, more documentation about the theme changer is given on dynamicdrive.com.
