Chatbox Help: how to automtically delete posts in the chatbox

Post by katiedot on January 6th 2011, 2:11 pm

Hi all, I did search but can't find an answer to this one, hope you can help.

I've got a phpBB3 forummotion board and use the regular chatbox widget installed from the modules>chatbox>configuration set up.

The problem is that the messages in chatbox (the archives) seem to stay there forever. As an admin I can swoop in and delete them every now and again, but I'm on a different time zone from most of my forum users and sometimes they share confidential information that then becomes visible to anyone logging in to the chatbox days later.

Is there any way to set it up so that nothing archives for more than an hour?

I've no proramming skills whatsoever, so if this needs templates or css stylesheets then please give me the dummy's guide!!

I've checked and it's not possible for anyone other than the admin to use the /cls command in chatbox.

Many thanks

No, the only way is to use /cls. The chatbox only stores the last 200 messages Smile

Thanks but that's really not very useful! The /cls command only works for an admin, not regular users.

Thanks. Looks like making all forum members mods in chatbox is the only 'fix'.

Many thanks to you both and appreciate your replies.

There is some misunderstanding, what do you want to do?

What I want to do is exactly as I stated in my first post. I don't want the archives of a chat in the forum-motion chatbox to be visible after a period of time.

I run a forum for a film star and some of my forum's posters share confidential information in the chatbox with each other which can't be publicly posted. I was horrified to find in the archives a chat from last week which they had all assumed had long since disappeared.

What I want is for the information in chat to disappear after an hour or so, not sit there forever more until someone else comes along and deletes it. It seems this is not possible.

The only way round this it seems is to allow posters using the chatbox to be able to delete their chat once they've finished chatting.

The /cls and /clear commands ONLY work for someone with moderator or admin rights in the chatbox. Therefore I have to give everyone on my forum moderator rights for the chatbox.

Or find a better chatbox to install on my forum which doesn't archive the chat. That would also be an option but I don't know how to do that.

Well, its not suggestable to give moderator access to all members in the chatbox. Many people can misuse it, so beware before giving the powers.

I agree Sanket, but what else can I do? It's important that people in chat can delete their conversations so that what they discussed can't be read days later by others. Making them all mods in chatbox seems to be the only way I can make that possible.

Can anyone recommend a chatbox that does this and how I can get it onto my forum instead of the forum-motion standard chatbox?

Well just a few users whom you trust can be made moderators. They can delete the content regularly.
