They're fine, but transparency is needed. And they can't be wide range used, because it's limited to Gimp forums only.

GIMP can add transparency quite easily.
Right click your layer, and click "Add Alpha Channel".
Then using the "Color Selection" tool, select the white space, and hit your "Delete" key.
Easy as that.
