Custom Domain and Google Apps

Post by xsdenied on February 25th 2011, 6:49 pm

Hi, I've got a custom domain name already, which I got through forumotion.

What I need to know is, how I can set up a google apps account for this domain?

Google apps requires a few things in order to do this, however I don't have access to do any of these and the domain registry says the domain is owned by Forumotion and not the name/details I provided when making this purchase.

IF this is not possible, THEN

Can I purchase another domain name myself, set up google apps first, and then take the root of the domain to my forums?

Thank you for your feedback in advance.

Not on Forumotion.

If you buy a domain from another host you have control over it.

Kindly clarify (sorry I'm being a noob about this) and one more question.

(1) Clarify:
If I buy domain from another host, can I set up google apps (myself) and then route that address to my existing forums?

(2.1) If yes to (1)
Please state YES to (1)
ANDI currently am using a custom domain. Would it be possible to free up that domain (i.e change ownership) so I can buy it using another host like GoDaddy and then perform these steps?

(2.2) If No to (1)
Please state NO to (1)
The site has been running for 2+ years now, and have a number of backlinks and members who remember its address, including likes on facebook giving me better SEO rankings from google and bing.

(3) If yes to (2.1)
Please state Yes to (3)
Where and how do I do this?

Thanks in advance.

Don't think anyone would be able to answer with a 100% due to the fact no one really understand 3rd party domains, since we all buy the domains at Forumotion.

Well I've gone ahead and purchased another domain with a different top level address and set-up google apps for it (after 10th may the free version won't allow more than 10 email addresses, every additional address would cost 50 USD per account)

Could you please let me know if I can purchase my existing domain and simply redirect it to this host, or should I just enable url forwarding to my current domain?

You would need to follow this http://help.forumotion.com/t7021-redirect-an-extern-domain-name-that-you-own-to-your-board

**Note** Panel will not be the same. Its to show you an idea on how to bring a domain to here.

Can I a purchase/transfer the existing domain I purchased from forumotion? (it's presently active until June from what I remember seeing in the whois records)

I'd like to do that as well please so I don't lose the existing backlinks I have.
