Question about young people revealing their identity
Okay, maybe I should've posted this in General section but meh...
So the thing is, my forum is for young girls and they really want like a penfriend or that kind of section. Or just a section where they can meet new people. I've been against it all along and I don't allow any kind of identity revealing but they really seem to want something like it. So here's my question: how do I do it safely or has anyone any idea how to do something like it.
I know there's an official dating site in my country where people as young as 7 years of age can sign up to so...I don't know where to draw the line. If they are over 13 can they actually reveal their identity and if something was to happen would it be of my responsibility cause I'm the admin or would it be "ok"cause apparently in my country you can reveal yourself even when you're seven or is it individual depending on servers?

I would like to give my personal opinion on this. You can't make it safe in any way. Thats the bottomline. I would say stick to your principles & policies. If anyone wants to find a penfriend etc, they can go on some dating sites or whatever.

Re: Question about young people revealing their identity
My personal viewpoint on this is that whatever the members are doing on your forum, such as revealing their identity and making penfriends, are to be done under their and your own discretion on the situation at hand. There are some dangers to revealing personal details on the Internet, so I tend to discourage such things. But at the end of the day, it's your choice.
Assume good faith and I advise you and your members to act under their own discretion like I said previously.

Could they not email (being a penfriend) on the forum via PM first and then if they are happy give each other their email address or add each other on facebook?

They don't think it's enough, they want a subforum. They're always talking about MSN and stuff. And I don't even like that.wow99 wrote:Could they not email (being a penfriend) on the forum via PM first and then if they are happy give each other their email address or add each other on facebook?

What is there from stopping them to start PM-ing, then swapping emails and facebook addresses? or MSN-ing?
You need to find out why they think it's so important to reveal identities on the forum.

Re: Question about young people revealing their identity
Um, I don't know. I think then they don't have to ask anyone separately. That they can just open a topic and have everyone contact them.
But I've told them I don't like the MSN talk and that if they are interested in someone they can just PM them about MSN.
Like in rules I've said no contact information is to be revealed publicly but when one says "everyone send me your MSNs to my inbox" then it's not that much better but I don't wanna be like a proper party pooper so I turn the other cheek.
So to stop that I thought maybe there is a way to do it, the subforum or something. I dunno.

What do you want that sub-forum to do?
You can have it only visible for certain group members if that's what you want.

Re: Question about young people revealing their identity
I dont like this question at all.
Just the idea of young children being on a forum and sharing personal information creeps me out. where are their parents? do they know they are on your site?
Plus how do you know who is on or joining your forum? you dont
So the answer is no, i would never allow such a thing.
MSN facebook pm is one thing, and you even have options on your forum for members to put msn, yahoo Im in their profile. but when you say penfriend.. you mean give home address?
God forbid if something bad to were to happen to someone.
You can be held liable for knowingly and allowing minors/children to share such personal information. And sure they can go to other places or send things through Pm.. but you have no control over what they may do in other places or PM.. But on your forum you do.
Comparing this to something such as 7 yo joining dating services seems a bit far fetched as well??
You have to think as a parent when you have minors like this.
They would never allow it, and sure you want them to have some freedom, but some things are just unacceptable, you have to set an example to better educate them along with ensuring their safety to the best of your abilities.
For allowing such a thing for persons so young, can make them feel since it's OK to do it on your site, then they can go other places and do it too..That would not be setting a good example at all.
Even adults are not safe on sharing such personal information online.
However, As Mature adults we can make this decision for are self, to where minors can be more vulnerable to make wrong choices or wise decisions on matters of this principle.
But on that note. You only have to be 13 on forumotion and most other public websites.
So in a sense it would be the persons responsibility for what they are sharing.Dose that mean i would let them share real home address for pen-pals... no of course not.
But anyone that may be under 13 on your site, then they are not even supposed to be there and you can be help responsible for allowing them there and or sharing personal information.

Re: Question about young people revealing their identity
Right, I guess I won't be doing any of it then. I think I just started hesitating cause it seems like I'm the only one on the forum who's against it.

Re: Question about young people revealing their identity
rhe, as i said i too am against it. You are not the only one. Kirk just made a post, which made up your mind. You can tell your members that for the general safety of all the members you won't add anything of that sort. I am sure everyone will understand you.
