Solved Branching out on my own

Post by LGforum March 22nd 2011, 12:00 am

Hey.

I was wondering, and it will be a while until i can. BUT, when/if my forum becomes big and popular, and i get myself a custom domain, is there anyway to bramch away from forumotion?

Like, downloading PHPBB and paying for web hosting of my new domain, would i be able to transfer ym forumotion forum or would i basically have to create it all again?

As much as i'm loving forumotion and its really good, in the future i'd prefer to really own a forum that i myself properly own and have full control over.
So if in the future i did download phpbb, would i be able to take my forumotion forum or would it have to be made all again in phpbb...

Thank you.

No... Forumotion dosnt allow you to download the Database.
But that dosnt mean that there arent other ways to do that ... xD

i was in the same situation back in 2009 .. i hated that i didnt had full control on my board ,and other peoples like Moderators had...

So i one day decided to try getting a cheap hosting service and look around it ...
in a few days i installed phppbb and i had to take the forum over from zero and link my few members to the new one...

in time i found out of a way of creating a phpbb db ,with all the users and forums, topics, posts etc
but as my forum grew a bit i decided not to restore cthe forumotion one
So i just converted Forumotion into a DB Which i just saved on my HDD And keep the forum there just for uh "history" lol

You can convert from forumotion to phpbb then to VBulletin etc lol

Id Advise you to do it while your board is not so huge as the Converting process will take alot more and it may fail

You do know Killer that you are not allowed and that isn't not possible anymore since Forumotion did update and will continue to update to prevent this. If you somehow manage to do this, this will be at your own risk.

If you want you can take your domain by requesting it.

Sorry But i dont know ... you are not allowed by who ,forumotion ???? O-o
as long as its your own board with your content you are may do whatever you want in my opinion ... Even if the content was created on Forumotion
that dosnt mean forumotion owns it and may bother waste money by sueing a kid or teen

For what i know its still working as it did for some time .. i dont find that ilegal or Disturbing to Forumotion in any way ...

And the only Risk i see is that there will show Errors in Converting Neutral

So if i joined up to a web host and set up a new domain

so instead of it being myforum.forumotion.co.uk (example)
i changed it to myforum.co.uk... and requested my forum to be transferred to my new domain... what would happen?

Would i still have the forumotion administration panel, or would all have to be done via phpbb?

SO there is no way to transfer my forum and all the users, data, topics, settings, etc to another domain and control via the phpbb admin panel and without forumotion involved?

I don't mind forumotion being involved, they are great, but eventually i might want to move on.

You are only allowed to transfer your domain name. All data is not being transfers. You will need to read this topic https://help.forumotion.com/t79157-transferring-your-domain-name-to-a-new-registrar-host for help on how to transfer. There are some guidelines as to when you can do this.

"For paid domain names, you need to wait 3 months after purchase. (Then, for a paid renew : 3 months. For a free renew : 6 months.)"

If you Buyed/Registered a Domain From Forumotion, yes you will see the same ACP And the same site ... its just a name Change .. so the rest is un changed, its still forumotion Smile

In time you can change/move your domain to other partys ,such as GoDaddy or Domain.Com or whatever...

After that you may get a hosting account and play around with understanding phpbb and find out how to Convert your Existing forum into a DB Compatible with phpbb ... (Google is your friend Wink)

I Still like the Forumotion ACP Design ,but i designed my own theme for the phpbb ACP ,making it darker ,as i like Very Happy

Anyways Im off Hello

I was just wondering, is there a reason for not supporting the automated converters?

I Guess its Because Forumotion dosnt want its Users away,The more forums there are the more money will come from the Ads that Peoples Click.

And for the reason that you've used them and at the end you decided to dump them and get something better ,as with chicks sometimes lol
Not Very Nice .. thats not how you appreciate someones "Support"
But as its a big network of forums and staff etc i doubt there are too much hard feelings lol

Just a though ....

TheKiller, because you left and come back you don't need to create a mess here and get yourself in trouble. If you moved away from Forumotion due to your reasons I'm not sure why you are back, seeing you still hate it here, but if you want to come here at least show the respect to others, company and the rules.

Apologizes ,i didnt intead to "create a mess" all i wanted is Support a member with his question .
Telling him simple "Sorry thats not possible" would have been silly....

I Am only back from time to time ,when im bored, so i said i try help others Smile
I Dont hate it ... otherwise i wouldnt bother support others ,this is a simple support as it is with other posts ive made here .. not to go against Forumotion or whatever

Well the question was answered,Converting such data from any host that do not allow nor offer it is illegal. And depending on a situation, any given host that do not allow nor offer data can sue and or prosecute do to the use of Unauthorized data transfer.. so not a good idea. if you want a forum that you can keep your data then free forum hosting is not what you want, forumotion or any other free forum hosting.
