Domain not working!?

Post by ribena_wrath on April 2nd 2011, 10:40 pm

Hello
Big problem with my forum.

My forum's free address is cb500.highbb.com
I got a custom domain which was cb500club.co.uk

It worked fine for ages, and now it won't let me access the forum through the custom domain. Only the free domain.

No one can access the site through the paid for domain.

I have changed NO settings with either my admin panel OR my domain host. What the hell has happened!?

I get the error message shown in the picture whenever I try to go to my site.

You need to try what Google is telling you.

cb500club.co.uk

Yes it is. The address is www.cb500club.co.uk
It's a UK address.

I'll try and explain it more thoroughly...

I registered my site with the free domain, cb500.highbb.com But then, I transferred my own domain to the website instead by updating the DNS and CNAME records. The address which I have been paying for is cb500club.co.uk It has worked for nearly a year now, and I am 1st in the Google searches with that domain. Now for some reason, it doesn't work.

Try typing this http://www.cb500club.co.uk into your browser. It does't take you to the site, but gives you a browser error page.
Now type in the forum free address, http://www.cb500.highbb.com into your browser it. It works! So the website is NOT down.
The reason this is confusing me is because I have touched no settings, and many people have used the site since the last time I updated anything. I have looked over my DNS settings and they have not changed. I have not even signed into either of my accounts for a while. So this problem seem sudden and confusing.

That screenshot is from the Chrome browser, but I have tried it on Safari and Firefox, and it has the same error. I carried out the advice my browsers give, but it changes nothing.

If you bought a domain from another host and having problems, the problem isn't with us. Try redoing your settings.

Mr.Mario, I have checked and re-checked all my settings. They are all fine. Nothing has changed over at my domain. None of the other domains I have registered are having these problems.

And according to leelaw others are having the same trouble too. A bug? a change in settings somewhere? I don't know what it is, but I want to fix it.

The opening of this site justifies, there is no issue on Forumotion's end.
Wherever you got the free domain name from you need to work on that end. Maybe you should try to get help from them.

The free domain is your own! It is provided with forumotion. Here it is, third one down on your own website.

Please read this thread which explains the matter further, with people who have the same problem.

Re: Domain not working!?

There is an issue on Forumotion's end. It's very obvious. I'm going to use ribena_wrath's forum and domain as the example here but the same applies for all of us who currently have this issue. There's probably many more out there that haven't reported this yet.

Forumotion sub-domain: cb500.highbb.com
Personalised domain: cb500club.co.uk

ribena_wrath has chosen to use www as the host record for his forum. In DNS he has made the www host a CNAME of cb500.highbb.com:

$ host www.cb500club.co.uk
www.cb500club.co.uk is an alias for cb500.highbb.com.

In his admin CP he has set www.cb500club.co.uk as the personalised domain. If DNS isn't set correctly it won't accept the personalised domain.

So far everything is set up correctly. This is how the FAQ tells you to set up your personalised domain. This is how we've all got our personalised domains set up and they were working up until 1st April 2011.

Here is a packet trace using ribena_wrath's forum and personalised domain to show exactly what happens. Text in red is what the browser is sending. Text in blue is what the Forumotion server is replying with.

First of all we send a request for http://www.cb500club.co.uk/. The Forumotion server tells us that location has moved and redirects us to http://cb500club.co.uk/ (here is the problem - it's ignoring what the personalised domain has been set to in the admin CP).

GET / HTTP/1.1
Accept: application/x-ms-application, image/jpeg, application/xaml+xml, image/gif, image/pjpeg, application/x-ms-xbap, application/x-shockwave-flash, application/vnd.ms-excel, application/vnd.ms-powerpoint, application/msword, */*
Accept-Language: en-GB
User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/4.0; SLCC2; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; Media Center PC 6.0; .NET4.0C; FDM; Creative AutoUpdate v1.40.01)
Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate
Host: www.cb500club.co.uk
Connection: Keep-Alive

HTTP/1.0 301 Moved Permanently
Date: Mon, 04 Apr 2011 15:14:03 GMT
Location: http://cb500club.co.uk/
Content-Length: 0

So now the browser goes off and requests http://cb500club.co.uk/ as instructed by the Forumotion server. However http://cb500club.co.uk/ has been setup to redirect to http://www.cb500club.co.uk/ which again is 100% correct and a valid thing to do. Because the personalised domain on Forumotion has been set to www.cb500club.co.uk and it should be working when this host header is sent. Not redirecting it somewhere else.

Surely someone understands this? It's not difficult to see there's a problem here and it's at the Forumotion end.

I have PM'd Typlo but haven't heard anything back.

Re: Domain not working!?

It is most definitely at the forumotion end. I have had my domain host checking this out and they have helped me alter my settings to point the opposite way (having now deleted my personalised forum domain from my admin panel) so that I can allow my members to log in.

I am not as technically minded as dave-r who up till now has been the only person giving any help to anyone. But anyone with an ounce of logic should realise that if all these personal domains were working perfectly up until the afternoon of Friday 1st April (GMT) that it is HIGHLY unlikely that they ALL would have made changes at exactly the same time.

Please please find the problem and solution...

Leelaw, your members are unable to log in?! Mine can access my site and use it fine using the free domain. So how did you reverse your domain? Or would it just be worth waiting for a fix, and using the free domain for now?

Thanks for the great explanation dave-r. I don't understand all of it, but I understand the basics. I guess we're all just waiting on forumotion to fix this. It must have happened to all the members, unless there is SOMETHING different we did that would provoke it?!

Re: Domain not working!?

Post by leelaw56 on April 4th 2011, 11:34 pm

My members - and myself were unable to even find my personal domain - I tried to follwo dave-r's explanation but then I got a permanent loop so no page loaded. I had to log into my admin panel using the utils link:-

http://www.forumotion.com/en/utils/

It was a right pain because it kept throwing me out and I would have to start the login process again. Once I did that I could log into my forumotion domain address but I was then the only member who could as all my members - and potential members - use the http://www.shihtzuwhispers.org.uk so I had already submitted a support ticket to my domain host daily.co.uk and they set the CNAME to point back to my forumotion domain so that at least if my members tried to log into the usual forum address they were re-directed to.

I am not technically minded so I find it quite confusing! I don't think it has happened to personal domains provided by forumotion. I doubt that anybody it has happened to has done anything - I had been on my forum just an hour earlier and it was fine - and I had done nothing in the damin panel - just checked a few posts. And somewhere else on this forum it has been suggested that it is NOT this end but the personalised domain hosts' end... well that would be a major coincidence unless we are ALL using the same doamin host (and I know that we are not).

If your members are able to log in to the free domain then I suggest you might be better to hang in there because I am now going to have to sort all my settings out again both here and on daily.co.uk once the problem is fixed.... if it is fixed Smile

I meant to say that if you click on my link above you will see the address change in the address bar to the forumotion one.

Hello People!

I'm from Brazil and here we are having the same problem too.

My custom domain (www.motoamigos.net.br) is unable since last friday morning and there are other users (forum own) reporting the same.

Here I created a topic to report this, but no answer from Admin Support to now!!

My free domain (amigosdemoto.livreforum.com) is able. But I have see many reports from my users/customers about this problem!

As some of you, I had already checked the config of custom domain , and it's all right.

So, I'm waiting for Forumotion support too.

OK Joph25, thank you for information.

But just in time, in my opinion, the support to act and solve this problem is too slow!
This is a critical problem, once many users (forum owners and forum users) are affected.

Waiting for best news...

Hi,

Sorry for the delay, but we need to understand that Typlo is a person/people too and gets a lot of requests everyday on 3 support forums(which includes Romanian and French service), though if this won't been fixed soon, I will try to bring this up to the notice of Typlo again, Kindly please be patient, Thanks.
