Solved Forum owner privacy

Post by dotdotdot on April 4th 2011, 6:26 pm

To the admins, I hope you can advise on this one. You've very kindly helped move my forum to a .com site. I guess this means that you've done the registration of the site's new name.

I'm being harassed by a troll on another forum who's sole aim in life is to uncover my identity. She has already posted what she can find regarding the registration of my forum. Can you advise how hidden my real name and address are?

I live in fear that one day she'll find out my personal details and post them on a very public forum. Please can you let me know how you register forums and how confidential the forum owner's details are?

Many thanks

ETA: I would send this by PM but really not sure who to contact with this.

Hello dotdotdot,

Your details are usually safe, and members can find out what your real name and address is only if you post it in a public place such as a forum. Then, there is also the IP address which every single computer has. An IP address records things such as location, web browser and other application details. Normal members shouldn't have access to viewing IP addresses so you have nothing to worry about in that respect.

My advice to you would be to ban this person until the problem stops. You can also do what Sanket has suggested. Smile

Regards,

Base

Many thanks Sanket and Base.

What I didn't make clear is that the troll is from another website entirely (IMDb.com), not my own forum.

I'm not great with computers and I'm concerned that it's some way possible to find out my personal details from the registration site as that's what she's threatening to do.

As long as you don't post any personal details on to a public place then you should be fine.

The only registration details that might be available are from your custom domain name if you have one. Otherwise no details are available.

Yes, that's what I'm worrying about. Forum motion kindly set up a custom domain name for my forum. What I'm asking is what information is given about me during the registration process and how accessible is that information to determined third parties?

In other words, if someone wanted to find out my name and address (which I gave to forum motion for the registration process) could they do it by checking the registry?

Sorry for not being able to make this clear; I don't know enough technical details to frame my question the right way.
