Solved Issue 5 members with same IP address host is cache-dtc-aa09.proxy.aol.com

Post by Admin_UFF2 April 12th 2011, 2:09 am

Im having an issue with trolls on my forum, after banning a user, said user came back under a new name new IP and the host name was cache-dtc-aa09.proxy.aol.com. I have 5 members who have posted from this same IP.

I know that AOL does some weird things with IPs etc, but how do I actually manage to ban these members.

Is this a proxy service banned members are using, if so its against my forums rules.

If anyone has anymore info or suggestions on how to prevent further attacks on my site it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank in advance!

Here is how to ban them. ADMIN Panel>>>Users & Groups>>>Users>>>Ban Control>>>Ban an IP Address. That is how you ban them from creating more accounts, but if there using proxy I would turn on the Confirmation code. It will stop most proxys.

I know how to ban the users that's not the issue. What is this confirmation code you speak of?

ADMIN Panel>>>Users & Groups>>>Users>>>Users Options>>>Confirmation code>>>Yes>>>Save. That makes all the members type a code and if they don't get it right they won't be able to register.

I do have that set up Nick. This is the new Captcha you are speaking about correct?

My real question is though, is this AOL giving members same IP address, or is it someone creating multiple accounts. I have read online that AOL will give thousands of users the same IP. This cant be true right?

Also, how would the Captcha code not work if someone is using a proxy server to hide themselves?

Thanks for your help by the way.

Well, it will not show the image. Also I have looked on a few sites and AOL does not allow the same IP. It is a member with the same IP. It is 1 person creating more than 1 account.

Awesome Nick,

Thank you for your help with this.. Ive been a wreck trying to keep thse trolls away. The content of my site is one in which I get a lot of Trolls, and then banned members coming back under new names and IPs etc.

Will this block proxy servers like Hide my ass or Anon me etc. This is what concerns me the most are the free ones on the web, and there are many of them too.

I just want my forum as secure as possible from attacks I have been getting from certain folks.

If you have any other advice Id love to hear it.

Thanks again! Smile

I know it will block most of them. It could block them all, but I don't think it will block them all. Yes it will fix Hide My Ass Proxy.
