Solved Problem with time zone settings

Post by lordamit May 27th 2011, 6:16 pm

Hi guys.
I suddenly noticed that my time in forum was totally wrong. I went to the user preference, and noticed that the timezone selected was the top most one. My timezone is UTC+6, and UTC+6 generally includes Almaty, Dhaka, and some other known Cities.

however, now it shows Novosibirisk and another name.

I won't be so sure about that. I mean, cache does not magically convert the options list, do they? But I tried, and failed anyway.

Also, I checked about Novosibirisk. It is around Russia, and it has UTC/GMT +7 hours.

It is not correct. In the Administration Panel it says for that area +6, but it is +7.

I do.

People who do not know about UTC+x format, selects the City they know. Generally, in list, a famous city per nation is mentioned so that people from a wide range of nations can recognize their time zone.

Now lets look at them:

Astana, largest city, former capital of Kazakhstan
Almaty, Capital of Kazakhstan
Dhaka, Capital of Bangladesh (which's flag is STILL not present in this forum.)
And finally, Novosibirsk , third largest city of Russia, largest city of Siberia.

That's why they are generally used for time zone settings. People know about them.

I think you might like to take a look at microsoft time zone list for UTC+6.

Still don't see the problem?

As far as I know, mentioning Astana/Almaty, Novosibirsk, and Dhaka is de facto standard for UTC/GMT+06. Handing down forumotion's own standard for time zones(which means showing two cities from same area) might not be a good idea.

Again, if they decided that, the time zone for all users using UTC+6 should've been automatically changed, so that it went unnoticed.

There is something wrong, in my opinion.

The problem is not about adjusting the time. The problem is with the menu of adjusting the time. I can close my eyes and use UTC+6 of course! But what about the disappearance of cities that represent UTC+6?

I was using IE9 all these time. But just now I cleared every cookie, cache of Firefox 4, and logged back in to site. It still shows the changed time zone menu.

Solved Re: Problem with time zone settings

Post by lordamit May 28th 2011, 1:10 pm

I am not sure if it is important enough to contact typlo. Then again, all the messed up times are now giving a headache. I can't even find out which topic I posted today and yesterday >.>

I also noticed some pecularities. For example, UTC+5.30 now shows Calcutta, Colombo, Kolkata.
As far as I know, Calcutta and Kolkata refers to the same city.

Meh..
Edit:
Judging by other people's reply, I guess I am not the only one facing this weird situation.

Hi,

Yes Indeed I also know the issue, the majority of Australian Capitals are also missing; as Australia has 4 different time zones, ranging from GMT+9 - GMT+11 , only having GMT +10.30 doesn't really help Rolling Eyes

It's a fm-wide issue, I don't know if this has been raised, maybe we can get it raised here?

That's what I was actually considering. Probably FM staff tried to improve the timezone settings, which unfortunately backfired. Most of the options now contains more than average names, often ending in "..." where more options show up upon mouse hovering.

As far as I know, this issue has not been raised elsewhere.

This topic was created on 27May(based on time I am viewing), and there is still no solution, nor any explanation. I assume that this is something being forced down on us, regardless of whether we like or not. Silently.
