posts being edited without permission

Post by velvetleggs on June 30th 2011, 9:27 pm

i am getting reports from some members that their posts are being edited without their permission. my moderators are saying it was not them. there is no "last edited by" message showing on the posts. i have looked at the moderation and administration boards under security in the admin area but nothing is showing as being edited - even the things i know i have had to edit myself.

is there a way to find out if the posts are being edited and who by
is there any way to have moderators only able to use moderator tools and not be able to edit the posts of other users - i would use this as an answer for the protection of the moderators, if they cant do something they cant be accused of it.

thankyou in advance sphinx

I don't think so, but I'm not entirely sure. A moderator's job is to clean up potentially harmful posts and maintain order when an Admin is not present.

So if one was to deny them the features to edit, they would just be a regular member with a fancy title. I don't think there is a feature to have them be able to delete posts/topics, but not edit anything.

I don't know how to sort it out but im also experiencing some problems regarding editing.

You say that the 'last edited by...' bit is not showing up.
I have that too, even though i know its a post that i've edited, and yet it doesn't say it has been edited.

very strange. Maybe one for the techincians.

No, he's saying that somehow someone or something is editing member's posts without their permission.

He was asking if there was some hidden information he could retrieve in case someone had edited something.

I know what he is saying yes and im afraid i can't contribute to that.

But he did mention in his post, that underneath the edited posts, it isn't even saying the 'last edited by...' sentence.

I am saying i also have this problem.

The only way to exactly be sure a post was edited is to have a screenshot before an edit and after an edit. The only people who can edit a post is the post author, a site moderator, or an administrator. Sometimes on my forum the Last Edited By does not show up in edited posts.

i have the board set up so any post that is questionable can be moved to a board only visible to me as admin and the moderators - the moderators do not edit anything - or are not supposed to and say they are not and i believe them or they would not be moderators. the moderator tools allow threads to be moved so any that need editing are put there and i do them myself - if the moderators were only able to do that and physically could not edit then they would be safe of accusations - at the moment if a member says to be "how do you know for certain X didnt edit my post" i have to answer that i dont - and that makes it rather easy for some trouble makers to stir things.

by the way i strongly suggest the idea of having a board only visible to moderators just to move threads to - a couple of times the forum has been hit by a porn spammer putting nasty pictures everywhere and with the moderator board it is easy to quickly move all the affected threads out of sight of normal posters, then you remove and delete the pictures, and return the threads to their normal boards at your own pace without having loads of reported post notifications pop up, and PMs saying such and such needs to be removed - as far as ordinary members are concerned everything was removed very quickly because they cannot see it.
