Recent Topic Widget Help Empty Recent Topic Widget Help

Post by Lee Tamotsu September 18th 2011, 11:05 pm

If you look to the right of this forum, you'll see a Recent Topic widget section. Below, the link is to my site, which has the same feature. (Posted just in case you need for a reference)

http://www.avatarepisodesrp.com/

So is there a way to move this Recent Topic widget in the middle of the forum? Maybe through the admin panel or by some type of CSS or Java code? If anyone knows anything about this, I would appreciate your help.

You move a widget down by placing other widgets on top of it Smile

Oh I know that, but is there a way to place it in the middle/center of the forum?

Say like I have the forum categories and I want the recent topics to be right above that instead of being to the left and right, like it is here. How would I go about doing that?

Is there a way via the AP or some kind of code?

Ah I see, you want it to appear in the centre of the Index page between categories?... If so I will leave that for someone else to figure out Smile

Yes, that's right!

Doing some digging through the forums, I found this one thread. (Actually I think you posted it)

https://help.forumotion.com/t94469-bring-back-recent-topics?highlight=recent+topics

Where someone inserted a code for the recent widget topics...I tried working with it in my homepage announcement section, but didn't have any luck.

<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=9,0,0,0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="170px" height="423px" id="InsertWidget_df276263-8659-4020-9ba8-de529f9dae13" align="middle"><param name="movie" value="http://www.widgetserver.com/syndication/flash/wrapper/InsertWidget.swf"/><param name="quality" value="high" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="menu" value="false" /><param name="flashvars" value="r=2&appId=df276263-8659-4020-9ba8-de529f9dae13" /> <embed src="http://www.widgetserver.com/syndication/flash/wrapper/InsertWidget.swf" name="InsertWidget_df276263-8659-4020-9ba8-de529f9dae13" width="170px" height="423px" quality="high" menu="false" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" align="middle" flashvars="r=2&appId=df276263-8659-4020-9ba8-de529f9dae13" ></embed></object>

What would I work with or change in order for it to display my forum's recent topic list and not the Forumotion Support Forums recent topics?

You would have to register with widgetbox..It's free to register, and create a widget for your forum recent topics....How you would then insert it where you would like it to show on your Index, would need someone more knowledgeable than me Very Happy

Recent Topic Widget Help Empty Re: Recent Topic Widget Help

Post by Lee Tamotsu September 19th 2011, 3:02 am

Oh very nice! Good to know! Have you ever created a widget there? I made one and saved the changes, but can't seem to figure out how to get the code.

Edit: I created a recent topic widget (at least I think so) and got the code. Anyway I tested it out by posting randomly in one thread, but it didn't show up for this widget.

Is there something that I am doing wrong? I tried it several times, but to no avail...

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://cdn.widgetserver.com/syndication/subscriber/InsertWidget.js"></script><script type="text/javascript">if (WIDGETBOX) WIDGETBOX.renderWidget('7872d27f-47d9-4e84-b19e-18c72ac6c909');</script><noscript>Get the <a href="http://www.widgetbox.com/widget/avatarerpf-theduke2222-2">Avatar(ERPF)</a> widget and many other <a href="http://www.widgetbox.com/">great free widgets</a> at <a href="http://www.widgetbox.com">Widgetbox</a>! Not seeing a widget? (<a href="http://docs.widgetbox.com/using-widgets/installing-widgets/why-cant-i-see-my-widget/">More info</a>)</noscript>

That's the code I got after it was all finished.

Post by musket September 19th 2011, 10:02 am

Ah, you selected the Javascript code, you should have selected the flash code if you want it to show in a message... The javascript will only work when it is made into a portal or forum widget and inserted via ACP>>modules>>structure>> portal/forum management...It's always better to select the flash code as it will work anywhere.... The flash code of your widget is
Code:
<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=9,0,0,0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="950px" height="423px" id="InsertWidget_845a1113-f2a8-462d-a817-42ac1b079bab" align="middle"><param name="movie" value="http://www.widgetserver.com/syndication/flash/wrapper/InsertWidget.swf"/><param name="quality" value="high" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="menu" value="false" /><param name="flashvars" value="r=2&appId=845a1113-f2a8-462d-a817-42ac1b079bab" /> <embed src="http://www.widgetserver.com/syndication/flash/wrapper/InsertWidget.swf"  name="InsertWidget_845a1113-f2a8-462d-a817-42ac1b079bab"  width="950px" height="423px" quality="high" menu="false" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" align="middle" flashvars="r=2&appId=845a1113-f2a8-462d-a817-42ac1b079bab" ></embed></object>
I think you've made it too big though @ 950x423 pixels, though it should show if posted as a flash code widget, in your forum as a message... if html is enabled. Smile

There is a recent facilty added to the ACP to make and use Javascripts with Jquery though I'm not familiar of how it could be used in this instance.

And yes I've made and used many widgets at widgetbox including the forumotion help recent topics that you mentioned Very Happy

Recent Topic Widget Help Empty Re: Recent Topic Widget Help

Post by Lee Tamotsu September 19th 2011, 1:06 pm

I probably should had explained myself better. I realize that now, was a bit late last night. Anyway I created the widget and it looked like it was working perfectly, like the Forumotion Widget code.

The problem is that it only shows the recent posts prior to after I created it, any new posts posted afterwords are not picked up by the widget at all. I tried working with it and creating several other widgets in its place, but couldn't find the problem. Has this happened to anyone else?

The only reason why it might seem to look like it is working, is because I always deleted my random posts soon after. I also tried the suggestions you offered, but none of those solved the problem either. I even tried deleting my Internet's history in case it was picking up older data, but it wasn't.

I probably did something wrong when creating the widget, but what that is I don't know. Given that you've made a lot of other widgets, I was hoping that you might know what a newb like me might had done incorrectly.

Aw, thanks. That was really nice of you.

I don't want to be ungrateful...but the one that you created has the same problem. It won't show any of the newest posts after the widget was created.

...So would I have to pay to get that feature? For it to show the actual new posts?

Very true, which I might end up doing. I was just trying to find a way to place the widget in the middle of the forum, before the forum content.

I've been told that it isn't possible with the Forumotion's widget.

Although I don't want to cough up money, if that won't solve the problems at hand.

I have made them before including one I use in the portal of my forum and it always updates the RSS, yours doesn't seem to update from the RSS for some reason whether it's new restrictions from widget box or your forum RSS feed is frozen.

What forum version are you using? I wonder if there was anything put in the templates or css that could affect the RSS feed. Other than that I have no idea.
unless new restrictions from widgetbox, maybe you need to post a proper post and not just one word For RSS to work Smile

I'm using phpBB3 and while I was away doing work another member posted a longer message, but it wasn't picked up either.

Edit: The widget is now showing some of the newer posts, but not all of them. It feels kind of random on which ones it picks.

I thought it might had been that it was picking up new posts from a certain category, but I don't think that's the case...

I think I see your problems! You guys want to move the recent topic in the center of the forum huh?

Why don't you see this first? http://vipfamily97.forumvi.com/forum or maybe this http://shopbp.forumvi.com/ I think that is what you guys want to do, right?

If it is, I can show you all how to do Smile You just have to use the widgets and the template, that's all! :wouhou:

Thank you!

Recent Topic Widget Help Empty Re: Recent Topic Widget Help

Post by Lee Tamotsu September 21st 2011, 2:28 pm

I don't have phpBB2, so I can't use templates. I just realized that. So I don't think I could do those.

Anyway the widgetbox is working now. At least with several threads that I and other members have posted in.

(I think there might be one section it doesn't respond to though)

The only problem (which it probably was to begin with) is that it takes a very long time for the widget to recognize the new posts.

It recognizes some very quickly and others very slowly...is there a way to fix that?

I don't think it takes long time to recognize the new posts.
Why don't you change your forum's version into phpbb2, then edit temp, then change it back to normal? I think it will work!
