In progress Visitor Messages

Post by fionnghal March 6th 2013, 9:59 pm

Probably a silly question but I've been trawling around this forum for an hour and still cant get an answer.

What are Visitor Messages and how do they differ from Private Messages?

Why can I click on a forum member's profile and see what people have written to them in Visitor Messages? The messages in question are all from other forum members so why do they show as visitor messages and not PMs?

Is there any way I, as Admin, can remove the Visitor Messages function from the entire forum or do individual members have to do it themselves?

Thanks

F

Only someone who has access to the admin panel can remove 'Visitor Messages'.

In order to remove Visitor Messages, go to your administration panel. Click on the 'Users & Groups' tab. Then on the left hand side of the screen you will click on 'profiles' in the 'users' section. Okay, in the middle of your screen there should be three tabs: 'Profile fields', 'Contact fields', and 'General Options'. You'll want to click on 'General Options' and then it'll ask 'tabs to display'. One of your choices is 'Visitor Messages'. If there is a check mark in the box next to it then it is activated, so you'll have to uncheck this and then hit the save button.

Visitor Messages, if I'm not mistaken, are messages that other people can post on someone's profile. I've seen them before in different forums. A PM is a private message from you to someone else. It's like having a private conversation between you and someone else.

Thanks Bazinga. I'll try your suggestion right away.

I'm still not clear on what VMs are. I have another forumotion forum and these Visitor Messages are not a feature. What baffles me is that all the things that my members can see in their Visitor Messages are items sent to other members that they thought were being sent as Private Messages. All of the people I have spoken to said they posted the message using the normal PM buttons. As you can imagine it has caused a bit of panic that these are showing as Visitor Messages instead.

I wonder if this has anything to do with when the recipient picks up their message via a mobile phone.

Anyone?

Are they pressing the button on the visitor message that some say New PM. If they are, they are not sending private messages. That button is for that page (visitor message). Also you can send private messages to the visitor messages page.
