Trying to modify templates Empty Trying to modify templates

Post by laurielurcher June 4th 2013, 1:07 pm

Hi yet another teething problem for me!
I am trying to modify templates.
I have bought 1000 credits
But this is all I get on any of the Templates pages in ACP\Templates administration, Absolutely nothing else at all on the page!
In this page, you can modify templates and change your forum look.
Modified templates are written in green.
(unpublished templates are shown red) To use the default template again, delete your template by clicking on delete.

Only templates of phpbb2 or PunBB versions will be affected.

You are using phpbb3, correct? If so you will not be able to modify the templates. Only phpbb2 and punbb offer editable templates.

Ah that explains it. So if I would like to do things like hide the info panel from non guests, I have to change over to phpbb2 then? Is it a newer version?

phpbb2 is an older version. It depends what you're doing though. What do you mean by 'hide the info panel from non guests' care to elaborate?

I'm not experienced with phpbb3 so I'm unsure if you can achieve such without template editing however, you could restrict the forum entirely from guests by modifying your forum permissions. (i.e. the guest will automatically be taken to the log in form)

Post by laurielurcher June 4th 2013, 7:28 pm

The problem is that we would like guests to see one section only of the forum which is quite important.

At the moment our forum is proboards and I can do that on pro boards but the new pro boards forum is driving my members crazy and I would really like to go over to you totally as yours is much more user friendly. With just these few things to sort out, Smile

You cannot change between forum providers as long as it is from forumotion to another provide (see this topic for more information), I don't know about other providers, but changing from another host to forumotion should be no problem unless pro boards doesn't want you to extract its database records of your forum (very likely they'll have something against it).

Trying to modify templates Empty Re: Trying to modify templates

Post by laurielurcher June 4th 2013, 7:40 pm

Sorry I think you misunderstood.
Obviously I can't change between forum providers. We would lock the old forum only llowing our members to access it to read stuff on it. Then we would come over to forum motion forum we have already set up. *on a trial basis to see if some of our members like it* That is not the problem. The problem is getting to grips with things that forum motion forums do differently to the way proboards forums do it Things like chaning / adding code so that we can conceal the info section from guests but not the bits we want guest to see. Also how do we make a mods room invisible to members except mods. Things like this. If we can get all these things sorted I am happy to leave proboards and start fresh with forum motion.

You can do all that with ease.

You may need to change to phpBB 2, though (which is much more solid that phpBB 3 in my opinion) if you want to change the forum footer, you needn't even purchase credits to do so (it's reserved for the founder only, however).

If you have set up your forum to be phpBB 2, I will gladly provide help.

Unfortunately it was set up to be version 3 and not 2. I don't understand the differences and wonder if 2 would work as well for us and if we will all have to go over to 3 with no choice soon, like proboards did to us with version 5.

You can always modify your forum version under Administration Panel -> Display -> Theme Version (it's on the right side of the page, not in the widgets; alternatively, go to Skins -> Choose a theme -> Version) and use the specified buttons to modify your forum.

So is this solved?

You can set moderator sections, admin sections, VIP sections or other groups in to forums and have the forums permissions set for the groups accordingly, For displaying the who's online section. you can either have it to where no one see it, or everyone including guest, even with template edit i do not believe you would be able to set it so guest can not see, however there may be a way to do it with java scripts , for that you would have to post in the codes and scripts section.. May be title it something like How to hide who's online section to guest? I am not sure if there are any scripts in the section or not for it but someone may know.

Post by laurielurcher June 4th 2013, 10:54 pm

Hi well its not solved because I still am not sure how I can hide it from guests but not members. It beginning to look like I may not be able to do it.

I am so not good at codes but can do beginner stuff so will try your suggestion of posting in the codes section thanks.

It would seem I may have to make it so that no guest can see any part of the forum including the whos on line section unfortunately which is not what I wanted but there you go, can you run me thru how to make guests register before they can see ANYTHING on our forum please?

Trying to modify templates Empty Re: Trying to modify templates

Post by kirk June 5th 2013, 7:37 am

Guest do not have to see any part of the forum if you have your forums permissions set for then not to have access

Once again as far as the who is online section? Who cares if they see that?
They still would not have access to anything on the forum if permissions are set.

Other then that you can have it so the who is online section dose not show, but if set this way no one would see it.
Like I said above you can try posting in the scripts and code section to see if someone may know how to have the who's online section like you are asking.

Alright, so I figured out how to do this.

When using phpBB 2, go to your Administration Panel, then to the Display tab, look for the Templates menu and click on General.
Look for the template called index_body and click on the small gear, then go to Line 174 of the now appearing code and replace <!-- BEGIN disable_viewonline --> with <!-- BEGIN switch_user_logged_in --> and on Line 222, replace <!-- END disable_viewonline --> with <!-- END switch_user_logged_in -->.
That makes the part totally invisible for guests and logged-out members.

You can only use JavaScript to do so, then.

Do you wish me to post such code?
