Forumotion Ranking - Forum appearing in category it does not belong to
Okay, so, I recently decided to check out my forum's ranking again on forumotion.com, and, instead of seeing our forum on top like usually, there was some other forum ranked #1 in the last 2 years (which wasn't there a while ago, I'm positive) which has absolutely nothing to do with the category my forum belongs to.
Before brushing this off as a rant, think of it, how would you feel when your hard work suddenly turns void by another forum placing them into a category they do not belong into.
Also, upon visiting their memberlist, I caught eye of a lot of ads which also prevented me from navigating properly from my browser until I closed the browser tab and opened a new one (mobile browser, that is).
And, also not unimportant, every single member only made one single post, as they even say that they are using automated posts from some other site...

Forums are ranked by the number of members, messages, and activity. The reason why you were first is because of the forum's activity. The forum in top rank now just have more activity then yours.

From what I saw on the site he mentioned, it just looks like a load of spam..or ripped content. The forum was started sometime February 2013 too, quite a small time frame to accumulate such statistics.SLGray wrote:Forums are ranked by the number of members, messages, and activity. The directory does not take into count what exactly is on your forum. It is based on the numbers.

Yes, I've studied it somewhat when I was working on one of my forums. A steady stream of "Posts/Activity per day" contributes to the total amount of activity points a forum receives. However, a day of "No Posts/Activity" would dramatically decrease your forums total activity points. You may sometimes reach a "deadpoint" where your activity points will increase slightly or might decrease. i.e. If your steady posts per day are say 5, 5 for each day adds to the value, but you'll eventually hit a wall if there is never a total increase in the activity. That's basically what I gathered from studying it.SLGray wrote:The directory does not take into count what exactly is on your forum. It is based on the numbers.
But what I was stating above is that the owner of that forum is possibly using some sort of bot to boost their forum statistics. If you look at their users nearly 99% of them never logged in, and most posts are made in such small time frames.

Sounds like someone is using there forum to post their spam so search engines will find it. If thats the case it should probably be reported then deleted.
Re: Forumotion Ranking - Forum appearing in category it does not belong to
As I said, I don't mind it being ranked over our forum, I just wanted to mention that it is in a category completely irrelevant to our forum and as such I feel inclined to report this.

It is up to the founder to place his/hers forum in a directory category.

Well if you don't like the category they chose thats tough because its their right to place it in any category they want even if its out of place. I would imagine a lot of forums are in the wrong category due to the founder changed the forum subject matter and theme and forgot to change the forum category for the forum directory.Ultron's Vision wrote:As I said, I don't mind it being ranked over our forum, I just wanted to mention that it is in a category completely irrelevant to our forum and as such I feel inclined to report this.
The more outstanding and pressing issue here seems to be the spam postings in that forum not its category and directory rankings.

Bump.
Anything that could be done or will be done about the massive spam on the forum?
