Vetting new members suspected of being returning banned members
Hi
I have been moderating on our sea fishing site for years now with very few problems,
Hope I've put this in the correct board ( I tried searching the topic first). Apologies if not in the correct place.
Most unusually we have just banned a member and deleted his account.
We have now had a minor flurry of new member requests to join, we might be paranoid but we are suspicious of two of these requests. We get the emails to authorise but there seems to be no option but to authorise or ignore.
Once authorised we look at the email address, we require new members to say where they are based ( they could fib of course) and we say hello. If the new member posts we can then look at the ISP address to confirm if we already know them so long as we spot it before it moves off the recent ISP history bit.
My question is does anyone have any tips to identify banned members before activating them rejoining under a different name or suggestions to improve our procedure?
Fir the moment we have put a stop on further requests to join whilst we ponder it.
We aren't all that technical so if it involves coding we are lost already!
Thanks in anticipation and admin do please move this if not in the right place.

Re: Vetting new members suspected of being returning banned members
Hello,
Unfornatelly at the moment all you can do is look at the registation email address to see if it is the same one as before or similar, however, if once the account is activated it is discovered to be a previously banned member, you can do one of several things, you can reban the account again, IP Ban the member (probably one of the most effective ways... But there are still ways around it) or ban the registation email address the last 2 would need to be done by an Admin.
Other then that there is little you can do except be viligant and cautious, do not activate accounts with email addresses that are obviously suedo and also do not acitave any account with a similar email address to one the member might use.
Hope this helps,
-Brandon
