Solved group or organization as founder?

Post by Heta August 22nd 2017, 9:43 am

Is it possible to have a founder account held by a group of people, or for example a registered association, or must it always be an individual person?

Hello, @Heta

The founder account only belongs to one member, the /u1 profile in every forum and can't be transfered to any other one.

I mean, you can share the account password with the number of people you want, although it's not recommended for security reasons.

Greetings.

Thanks. I assume it is always that one member who is ultimately responsible for seeing to it that forum content remains legal?

Just asking because an organization might want to create a forum where it would be easy to transfer the founder account occasionally, and it would be ideal if the organization could be accountable, collectively, rather than individual, temporary account holders and admins.

Hello,

As Mpelmmc said, our system is set up so the founder account is held by an indiviual. You could just share the password but like he said it isn't recommended for various security reasons.

The founder account is the single most important account on a forumotion forum, it has access to everything in the acp and it would be with that account's details that you would be able to access the forum utilities to do stuff like back ups, etc. Since the founder account is considered the single most important account on a forumotion forum it is not recommended that you share the password or anything.

You could though if you really wanted or needed to so that several indiviuals have access to it.

you can make co admin's on the account so say 2 or 3 or even more have admin right's

This is done by going ot the following page.

ACP >> Users & Groups tab >> Groups >>
Group Administration >> click on Administrators >>

Add the names to that account.

What will your new admin's see? :
They will see all the basic admin account data like the founder.

What can't they see ?:

Co admin's can not see
1, The templates page,
2, The credits page,
3, Backup tool's,

I hope this helps Smile

Solved Re: group or organization as founder?

Post by Heta August 22nd 2017, 7:57 pm

Thank you, everyone, for your advice, it has clarified some things.

I have actually gone through the founder changing process once, receiving a founder account from someone who did not have time to manage it. It was easy enough, the only awkward detail was the previous person's messages remaining on the forum with my name and avatar on them. I just copied a little note to each one to clarify that they weren't really mine.

However, if we needed to do the same again, the problem would be compounded. There would be the first account holder's messages still there, and mine - a considerable number of them - with the next account holder's name suddenly on them. Confusing for anyone who might want to look through old discussions.

The most practical thing for us to do would be to have the founder account in the name of an organization, which could then appoint one person at a time to be head admin. Messages from the head admin account could be kept impersonal, reflecting organization's views only. But what I still don't know is whether Forumotion rules would actually allow this; in essence, whether the name of a registered association, or equivalent, could be given as account owner when the forum is created, instead of a person. If there were at any point problems with forum content, the board or executive committee of the association would have to be held responsible collectively.

You can use any username you want.  You can exactly changed the founder's account username in the AP.

All founders are responsible for everything on the forum.  Just read the Terms of Service.

... reading the Terms of Service, it does look quite inevitable that there has to be one named individual in charge of the founder account at all times, and that's the one who enters into contract with Forumotion, and is personally responsible for monitoring content.

If you are wanting to create a forum for an organization, you can and let others use the founder account.  You just need to understand that letting others know about the founder account is a security risk.  You need to trust everyone and change the founder's account information each time the founder changes.

The problem with having more then one founder is that we as the staff at  FM would not know who we are talking to at the time if there was a problem....

Only the real founder of the forum should talk to us about problems with the forum and if say a co founder was to talk to us and they don't know what was changed then it would mess things up and can even make us think the forum was hacked..

this is why we don't like any one but the founder having the account.

Remember a founders account is only meant to be used by one person not lots of people.

APE is correct. We will only be able to help the founder that has the forum creation information.

Solved Re: group or organization as founder?

Another thing you could have done (too late now, but just wanted to throw it out there) is simply not poat from the founder account and have everyone post from normal admin accounts and whoever is desiginated founder can just login to the founder account whenever they need to anything with the templates or credits or some other founder only stuff. The rest of the stuff, posting and what not can just be done on normal admin accounts.

I have seen this done even on forums owned strictly by an indiviual, doing this would take the confusion away whenever a switch occurs.

From what I have read though, it is too late for that though since you guys have been posting with the founder since day 1 it seems.

None the less what everything everyone has said so far about the founder account being shared is a security risk is 100% correct and it is strongly not recommended you do so.

Thank you, that clarifies the reasons behind the policy. I will explain this to our forum members. We may create a new forum at some point, and then we will be able to plan ahead and arrange things so as to minimize the need for transfers from one person to another.
