Solved Safe URL issue

Post by Niwrok on August 26th 2018, 9:06 pm

Dear Support,

At our forum (a movie review and discussion forum in Hungarian; filmforum.hungarianforum.com) we usually share the URLs of our posts via facebook. It worked for years, but recently facebook started to check, if an URL is safe, and forbid the ones are not, like our forum.

As I see that the central Forumotion site, and even the localized www.hungarianforum.com has the proper safety seal (security certificate), I'm asking if forums with forumotion engine will also have the necessary security certificate in the near future, or how can we apply for one?

Attila

Hello,

Just adding that just because a site doesn't have ssl doesn't mean its not secure. Ssl certificate just adds an extra layer of protection. Also I share non https links on facebook all the time and it works. I don't know why it doesn't work for you.

It started only this week, when we realized, all of our post on facebook with http links had been deleted.
Also when we tried to access our forum through the link on facebook, we received a warning about that the url is not considered safe.

I just ran a quick test and it let me share my testing forum's link which doesnt have https. So I dont think facebook is blocking non https links. Also all my old posts with http links are still up as well.

When I read about the Advance Package, I have thought that would be a solution, but since @brandon_g shared his experience, I'm not that sure... scratch

All new apps created as of March 2018 have this setting on by default "must enforce secure HTTPS" and you should plan to migrate any existing apps to use only HTTPS URLs by March 2019
also chrome has recently announced that they will mark all HTTP sites as insecure soon, from version 68 on, that will be released in July 2018

Don't get me wrong, having an ssl certificate is definitelly a good thing to have, I have it on my main forum and google has started to push ssl ceritificates in their searches and stuff. What I meant was that it is not required to have an ssl certificate for your forum to be secured or for it to be posted on social media. It is better to have it, then to not though.
