Solved Question about guest behaviour

Post by BravoSix July 8th 2020, 3:12 pm

This isn't really a problem per se, but more of a question concerning guests.

I've recently closed my forum to guests and you need to be a registered member to post or browse the forums. That said, some of the same guests that would browse before (info provided to me by the ISP lookup function in the Admin CP) are still coming back to the forum and spending considerable time there. Since they can't view anything, I find this confusing. Some guests have the crawler or bot info in their lookup, but these members I'm speaking of, do not.

I'm confused why they'd spend so much time on a forum they can't access. Of course...

Solved Re: Question about guest behaviour

Post by brandon_g July 8th 2020, 4:13 pm

Hello,

Assuming you have all the forum permissions set up correctly all they would get is the login page. If you set it so guests can't view the forum but can still read topics then it is possible they are loading specific topics they had bookmarked already or something.

It is also just possible they leave right away and there is a delay for it to disappear from the admin panel. I know when I leave my forum, unless I click log out, it will show me as online for another couple minutes before it finally shows me as offline.

Bottom line is though, if you have everything set up correctly in the admin panel for forum permissions, then all their seeing is the login page and it's possibly just a delay in the admin panel updating is why it looks like they are there for a long time.

Solved Re: Question about guest behaviour

Thanks Brandon. I DO have it all set up correctly as I make checks by logging out occasionally to see what things look like and all guests can see is the log in page.

I assume you're correct in the lag of time, when they're browsing and show as online for a while. Maybe some of them are hoping I've changed my mind and re-opened to guests which would explain the same IPs visiting over and over. Of course...

Cheers!
