Alternative for bbcode

Hi!
As I was searching for a way to add custom bbcode (I know now I cannot do that) I found a topic that linked to that topic: https://help.forumotion.com/t115287-new-custom-bbcode-button-with-simple-function According to the users in the first topic the same method can be used as alternative for a custom bbcode. BUT that topic does not provide answer only link to the external site that is dead. Does anybody know what was the method to create custom button?
